Actalent is seeking a Pharmacy Technician specializing in sterile compounding (IV medications) for a contract-to-hire role based in Hoover, Alabama. The role emphasizes safe preparation and dispensing of intravenous medications, with strict adherence to aseptic technique and regulatory requirements.

The technician will support clinical operations across clinics, manage sterile products, participate in inventory control, and ensure proper handling of hazardous drugs and CSTDs.

Qualifications

  • Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Demonstrated experience with sterile compounding, including preparation of intravenous medications.
  • Proficiency in aseptic technique as outlined in USP standards.
  • Experience in a hospital pharmacy or sterile compounding environment.
  • Involvement with compounding and dispensing hazardous medications preferred.
  • Experience with investigational drug management, including inventory, documentation, and preparation for dispensing.
  • Familiarity with CSTDs and their role in hazardous medication preparation.
  • Exposure to purchasing activities with vendors and contracts.
  • Understanding of inventory control strategies for high-cost medications.
  • Training in hazardous drug exposure response and spill control.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and dispense intravenous hazardous and non-hazardous medications safely and accurately.
  • Use PPE correctly and maintain compliance with regulations and policies.
  • Support CSTDs usage in hazardous drug preparation and participate in evaluation processes.
  • Complete training for storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous drugs with annual competency checks.
  • Follow procedures for hazardous exposure and spill control, including treatment of exposed individuals.
  • Assist in CADD pump preparation after competency demonstration.
  • Support investigational drug management with inventory, documentation, and preparation for dispensing.
  • Monitor and minimize medication waste and optimize drug use through scheduling.
  • Perform daily purchasing activities with vendors and manufacturer contracts.
  • Promote inventory control and reduce expired products, aligning purchasing with product needs.
  • Maintain training and continuing education documentation per standards.

Hiring a Team of Pharmacy Technicians – Sterile Compounding (IV Medications)!!

Job Description

This role focuses on the safe preparation and dispensing of intravenous hazardous and non-hazardous medications within a specialized sterile compounding environment. The pharmacy technician supports clinical operations by handling sterile products, maintaining compliance with regulatory standards, and contributing to efficient inventory and investigational drug management across multiple clinics. This position is ideal for a technician who enjoys a niche area of pharmacy practice involving sterile compounding and IV drug mixing.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and dispense intravenous hazardous and non-hazardous medications safely and accurately in accordance with established protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly and consistently across all aspects of hazardous drug handling, maintaining full compliance with applicable regulations and policies.
  • Embrace and support the use of closed-system transfer devices (CSTDs) in the preparation of hazardous medications, including participating in evaluation processes and maintaining familiarity with relevant regulatory standards.
  • Complete comprehensive training in the storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous drugs before preparing or handling hazardous preparations, and participate in ongoing competency assessments at least annually.
  • Follow documented procedures for hazardous drug exposure and spill control, including appropriate treatment of individuals accidentally exposed to hazardous medications and proper disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Assist in CADD pump preparation after demonstrating required competency, ensuring accurate and safe setup for patient use.
  • Support investigational drug management by assisting with inventory control, documentation, information and record keeping, and preparation of investigational products for dispensing.
  • Monitor and minimize medication waste by adhering to policies and procedures, including dose rounding and optimizing drug use through schedule coordination.
  • Perform daily purchasing activities for the pharmacy, working with vendors, group purchasing organizations, and manufacturer contracts to maintain appropriate stock levels.
  • Promote effective inventory control strategies, including minimizing expired products, supporting adequate medication turnover, and aligning purchasing with product-line needs to manage high-cost items efficiently while reducing excess stock.
  • Apply special precautions when receiving hazardous substances and verify adherence to drug-specific shipping and handling requirements to maintain product integrity and safety.
  • Contribute to drug shortage management by supporting purchasing strategies, identifying alternative products, and assisting in the implementation of contingency plans.
  • Leverage information technology resources, including clinical and automation systems, to prepare reports and data that support organizational, departmental, and individual decision-making.
  • Evaluate and monitor equipment and storage facilities according to standard operating protocols, ensuring ongoing fidelity checks for medication storage, compounding, and delivery systems.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of training, competencies, and continuing education activities in line with regulatory and organizational standards.

  • Ability to attain and expand knowledge through on-the-job training, online or publication-based learning, employer-based structured didactic programs, or accredited formal study.
  • Interest in working within a niche area of pharmacy focused on sterile compounding and IV drug mixing.
Work Environment

The pharmacy technician works primarily in sterile compounding settings, focusing on the preparation and mixing of IV medications, including hazardous and non-hazardous drugs. The role involves floating to different clinics across Jefferson County to perform sterile compounding duties, requiring flexibility and adaptability to various clinical environments. Work is performed in controlled, clean areas that support aseptic technique and compliance with USP and USP . The position relies on the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), closed-system transfer devices (CSTDs), and specialized compounding equipment and storage systems. The environment emphasizes safety, regulatory compliance, and precision, with regular use of information technology and automation systems to support medication preparation, inventory control, and reporting. Shift is M-F 8am-5pm.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $28.00/hr.
