About the Role

Our client, a highly respected secondary school in Welkom, Free State , is looking for an inspirational and experienced Head of Department (HOD) for STEM . This leadership position involves overseeing the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics departments, driving academic excellence, and fostering innovation in teaching and learning. The successful candidate will be responsible for curriculum development, staff management and professional development within the STEM faculties, and ensuring high standards of student achievement. This is a key strategic role for a passionate educator dedicated to promoting STEM engagement and preparing students for future academic and career pathways. The role demands strong leadership qualities and a deep understanding of contemporary STEM education best practices within the Welkom, Free State educational landscape.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics departments.
• Develop and implement innovative STEM curricula that meet national standards and inspire student interest.
• Oversee the professional development and performance management of STEM teaching staff.
• Monitor student progress and implement strategies to improve academic outcomes across all STEM subjects.
• Foster a culture of inquiry-based learning and practical application within STEM education.
• Manage departmental budgets and resources effectively.
• Promote STEM subjects through extracurricular activities, competitions, and external collaborations.
• Ensure the safe and effective use of laboratory equipment and technology resources.
• Collaborate with other Heads of Department to ensure a cohesive whole-school approach to education.
• Represent the STEM faculty in school leadership meetings and contribute to overall school strategic planning in Welkom, Free State .

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in a STEM field and a postgraduate qualification in Education.
• Minimum of 8 years of teaching experience in secondary STEM education, with at least 3 years in a leadership or HOD role.
• Proven experience in curriculum design, implementation, and assessment for STEM subjects.
• Strong leadership, mentoring, and team management skills.
• Excellent understanding of current educational trends and technologies in STEM.
• Demonstrated ability to drive academic improvement and foster student engagement.
• Strong organizational and strategic planning capabilities.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• A passion for promoting STEM education and its relevance to future careers.
