Job summary

Reliance Metalcenter in Salt Lake City, UT is seeking a seasoned Purchasing Agent/Buyer to source, procure, and manage inventory for structural steel, plate, sheet, and related metal products. You will ensure optimal stock levels, competitive pricing, and on-time delivery while maintaining strong vendor relationships across the metal fabrication and distribution sectors.

Responsibilities include collaborating with sales, warehouse operations, and logistics to anticipate stock needs, review MTRs

Qualifications

Must have extensive purchasing or procurement experience in steel/metal sectors.
Understanding of steel grades, shapes, nesting, and pricing terms.
Strong ability to calculate weights, dimensions, and pricing conversions.
Experience with ERP/MRP systems and advanced Excel for inventory control.
Excellent negotiation and vendor-management capabilities.

Responsibilities

Source, negotiate, and purchase raw materials to maintain optimal inventory.
Calculate yields, nesting layouts, and stock lengths for cost efficiency.
Convert pricing metrics (cwt, tons, etc.) accurately.
Build and maintain vendor relationships with mills, service centers, and processors.
Evaluate vendor performance on delivery, quality, and price competitiveness.
Coordinate with sales, warehouse, and logistics to anticipate stock needs.
