Job description

DIRECT HIRE opportunity for a Steel Procurement / Purchasing Manager in the Splendora, TX area!

A highly diverse custom steel fabrication company in the Splendora area is seeking an experienced Procurement / Purchasing Manager who can do more than traditional purchasing. This person will be responsible for developing strategic sourcing solutions, controlling material costs, and ensuring the company has the steel and industrial materials needed to keep projects moving.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

We are looking for a forward-thinking, resourceful "outside-the-box" buyer who knows how to find material when it isn’t readily available. The right person will have established relationships with steel mills, service centers, distributors, manufacturers, and other suppliers both domestically and internationally and will know who to call when a difficult-to-source grade, size, or quantity of steel is needed.

This is NOT simply a purchase-order role. We need someone who can leverage their industry network, market knowledge, and creativity to locate hard-to-find materials, identify alternative sourcing options, negotiate favorable terms, and solve supply-chain challenges before they impact production.

Salary: $85,000-$110,000/year, depending on experience
Benefits: Competitive benefits package

The perfect Procurement / Purchasing Manager will have:
  • 7+ years of purchasing, procurement, sourcing, or supply-chain experience in steel fabrication, heavy manufacturing, industrial construction, energy, or a related industry.

  • Significant steel purchasing experience with strong knowledge of steel products, grades, plate, structural shapes, pipe, valves, fittings, flanges, and other industrial materials.

  • An established network of contacts with domestic steel mills, service centers, distributors, manufacturers, and suppliers.

  • International sourcing experience and established overseas supplier relationships are highly preferred.

  • A proven ability to think outside the box and creatively source difficult-to-find or long-lead steel and materials when traditional suppliers cannot meet the need.

  • Strong understanding of steel and commodity markets, pricing cycles, mill capacity, lead times, freight, tariffs, and supply-chain risks.

  • Experience identifying alternative sources, material substitutions, mill-direct opportunities, bulk purchases, blanket orders, strategic inventory, and supplier stocking programs.

  • Proven ability to negotiate pricing, delivery, freight, payment terms, and supplier agreements while building long-term vendor relationships.

  • Ability to review drawings, bills of material, specifications, grades, sizes, quantities, and certifications to ensure materials meet project requirements.

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to find creative solutions that reduce cost, improve availability, or shorten lead times.

  • Experience monitoring inventory, forecasting material requirements, and identifying potential shortages or supply-chain issues before they affect production.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and negotiation skills with advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency.

  • Experience with computerized purchasing, inventory management, or ERP systems.

  • Experience working within quality systems and knowledge of API, AISC, ASME, ASTM, AWS, or ISO standards is highly preferred.

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; extensive relevant purchasing experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
