Job summary

Steel Service Corporation is seeking a Steel Fabrication Quality Inspector to ensure fabricated materials meet applicable codes and shop drawings, with a focus on weld quality per AWS D1.1. The role requires verifying dimensions, welds, and related workmanship, and coordinating with welders and painters to sustain production standards.

Qualified candidates have at least 1 year in welding inspection, a High School/GED, and ideally an Associate degree in Welding.

  • 1+ year of experience in welding inspection or welding shop operations.

Responsibilities

  • Verify member lengths, hole locations and diameters, sub-assemblies, bevels, camber, preheating and paint requirements.
  • Inspect welds for size and soundness; perform non-destructive tests as required by codes.
  • Calibrate and issue inspection equipment to personnel; ensure accurate shop drawings and weld information.
  • Collaborate with fitters, welders, painters, and foremen to maintain quality and avoid field errors.

The main purpose of the Quality Control Inspector position is to assure that all fabricated materials have been fabricated correctly as required per all applicable codes, project specifications and approved shop drawing. Additionally, the Quality Control Inspector must ensure that all welded members meet the acceptance criteria as per the American Welding Society.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

Must verify a number of weld performance criteria and determine the acceptance, rejection and issuing of non‑conformance. Specific verification requirements are:

  • Verification of member length
  • Verification of hole LOC and DIA
  • Verification of sub‑assemblies B. comp.
  • Verification of CPES and bevels
  • Verification of camber
  • Verification of preheating
  • Verification of main member piece mark, sequence, paint, and profile
  • Verification of proper weld joint, fit‑up requirements to keep member from being missed or duplicated as well as ensure correct paint requirements.
  • Inspection of completed welds verification of weld size and perform non‑destructive testing of welds to determine weld soundness and strength of weld.
  • Must comply with Steel Service Quality Control Inspector Responsibilities "Inspection and Testing - Procedure No. 13" in accordance with A.I.S.C and A.W.S. D1.1 process (see Inspection and Testing - Procedure No. 13)
  • Responsible for correction of incorrectly fit sub‑assemblies and unacceptable welds to avoid field repairs and negative production results.
  • Accountable for painted material corrections to prevent coatings failure and field repairs of failed coatings.
  • Interact and interface with fitters, welders, painters, shop foreman, and plant superintendent.
  • Must be able to identify and solve production problems such as:
  • Correction of incomplete shop drawings
  • Dimensional errors
  • Incorrect hole dimensions or diameters
  • Incorrect weld joint fit‑up
  • Incorrect or missing weld information on shop drawings
  • Incorrect weld symbols
  • Missing weld details
  • Missing dimensions on shop drawings
  • Responsible for calibrating and issuing inspection equipment to personnel.
  • Inspectors must perform their job with integrity, professionalism, dedication, and fairness while doing their job. Inspectors must maintain the highest standards and demonstrate compassion when dealing with others.
