Job Summary

Entry level steamfitter: installs, maintains and repairs heating and ventilating systems, including radiators, steam lines, fittings, bent and straight tubes in heater tube boilers, and internal feed lines in boiler drums. Performs cutting, threading and welding of pipes and materials for repair. Work involves assignments of increasing scope and complexity as the employee gains familiarity with the work environment.

Essential Functions
  • Individual must be proficient in arc welding.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs School District heating and ventilating systems.
  • Works from blueprints in the installation, repair and/or replacement of radiators, steam lines, fittings, bent and straight tubes in heater tube boilers, steam drums, mud drums, such as cast‑iron sectional boilers.
  • Disassembles and repairs built‑in, recessed, or convector‑type radiators.
  • Prepares material for steam‑fitting jobs by cutting, threading and welding pipes and other material.
  • May test new equipment for performance and recommend methods of correction in case of malfunction.
  • Checks mechanical equipment and modifications to insure that safety standards are met.
  • Handles boiler and heating system emergencies in School District facilities.
  • May estimate, order and transport material and equipment to complete work orders at assigned locations.
Other Functions

Performs incidental work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, and materials of the trades. Considerable knowledge of the use of the tools of the trades. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions utilized in the trades. Skill in the care and use of the tools, materials, equipment and power machinery utilized in the trades. Ability to interpret and work from blueprints, sketches, drawings and specifications. Ability to keep records and prepare reports of completed work assignments. Ability to accurately follow written and verbal directions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and superiors.

Minimum Requirements

Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Three years of experience in the appropriate trades area.

Certificates / Licenses

Possession of a proper class license valid to operate a motor vehicle in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure of appointment.
