Job summary

Virginia Tech is seeking a Utilities Distribution Specialist to install, maintain, and repair critical infrastructure including steam and chilled water lines on the Blacksburg campus. The role requires operating heavy equipment and navigating high/low voltage systems in tunnels.

The position emphasizes teamwork, attention to drawings, and safe, efficient work practices. Emergency shifts and site access are possible, with visa sponsorship not available.

Qualifications

• Commercial Driver’s License with Class B endorsements and a valid DOT medical certification.
• Ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objects up to 50 pounds alone, or up to 100 pounds with assistance.
• Ability to climb stairs and work from ladders/scaffolds; stand, walk, sit for long periods.

Responsibilities

• Assisting with troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and installation of steam lines, chilled water lines, ction lines, and instruments.
• Performing installations or replacements of water, storm, sanitary sewer, steam, and heating hot water piping systems and related equipment.
• Working around high and low voltage electrical distribution systems in tunnels as required.
• Reading and interpreting construction documents and shop drawings.
• Promoting responsible and efficient work by giving clear instructions to team members.
• Developing knowledge of materials and equipment used on utility projects.
• Working individually or on a team to execute repairs or installations.
• Operating heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes, trenchers, line/service trucks, forklifts.
