Job summary

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking a Steam Systems Mechanic to maintain, repair, modify, replace, and install boilers and related equipment across campus facilities. You will work with electronic, pneumatic, and PLC controls, and perform precise mechanical adjustments.

Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, repairs of pumps, valves, and gearboxes, and interpreting blueprints to ensure compliance with manufacturer specs. Onsite position with day shift expectations.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with four years of related experience.
• Associate degree or technical diploma in Mechanical Systems/Maintenance, Electronic/Industrial Controls, or Electrical program preferred.
• Boiler Operator License or ASOPE Class III certification or equivalent preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, replacements, and installations on boilers and related equipment.
• Work on electronic, direct digital, pneumatic, and PLC controls for boilers and support equipment.
• Repair boiler electrical and mechanical components, pumps, valves, fans, and related systems.
• Set clearances using dial indicators, micrometers, calipers and other precision tools.
• Rebuild gear boxes, drive couplings, and compressors; service steam valves and regulators.
• Interpret blueprints and manufacturer specifications for boiler/pump/fan work.
• Maintain records and comply with safety and regulatory requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Description

Steam Systems Mechanic
The University of Alabama at Birmingham

Job Summary:
To perform maintenance, repairs, modification, replacement, and installation of boilers and associated equipment, components and supporting equipment located in the District Steam Systems (DSS) buildings, steam vaults and in other outlying facilities on campus.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Performs preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, modifications, replacements,
and installations on electronic, direct digital, pneumatic, and PLC (Programmable Logic
Controllers) controls and devices for boilers, associated equipment components, and
supporting equipment to include controls, meters, relays, sensors, analog I/O, isolated and
non-isolated I/O, VFD.
2. Performs preventive maintenance, repairs, modifications, replacements, rebuilds and
installations on boiler electrical and mechanical components and supporting equipment
such as pumps, fans, deaerators, piping, valves, heat exchanges, motors, hoists, motor
control centers, power and lighting panels, emergency generators, lighting systems, air
compressors and drying systems, and other similar equipment.
3. Performs boiler, fan and pump rebuilds including the replacement of O-rings and gaskets.
4. Sets clearances on labyrinth seals, journal bearings, seal openings, thrust and counter
thrust clearances per the manufacturer’s specifications using dial indicators, inside and
outside micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring devices.
5. Performs rebuilds of gear boxes, drive couplings, intermediate shafts, fan blade pitches,
compressors, pumps, and seal replacements. Packs steam valves, rebuilds steam regulator
and relief valves with proper settings for steam pressure. Sets fuel/air ratios for boiler firing.
6. Interprets blueprints, sketches, or other descriptions of parts to determine their accuracy
relative to the manufacturer’s specified clearances for boiler/pump/fan repairs, including
disassembly/reassembly procedures.
7. Utilizes and maintains records and performs all service and maintenance repairs in
accordance with current state and insurance regulations for boilers and associated
equipment. Follows proper safety rules and regulations for clearances, vault entry and any
other applicable rules and regulations.
8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Hourly Pay Range: $24.05 - $31.30

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and four (4) years of related experience is required. An associate degree or technical diploma in Mechanical Systems/Maintenance, Electronic/Industrial Controls, or an Electrical program is preferred.

Boiler Operator License or ASOPE Class III certification or equivalent preferred.
