Job summary

The New York City Police Department Building Maintenance Section (BMS) seeks a Steam Fitter’s Helper to support heating, ventilation and boiler systems across city facilities. Under direct supervision, you will assist with piping, equipment installation and maintenance, following plans and sketches.

The role includes on-the-job measurements, possible vehicle operation, and adherence to city policies. Minimum qualifications require several years of mechanical experience, with preferred training

Qualifications

• Three years of full-time satisfactory mechanical experience as a Steam Fitter’s Helper within the last 10 years.
• At least 1.5 years of full-time mechanical experience plus relevant training to make 3 years total; six months of trade school counts per year of approved training.

• Assist in piping and equipment work for heating, air conditioning, compressed air and processing systems.
• Assist in installation, maintenance and repair of piping and equipment in heating, air conditioning and processing systems.

Job description

** This position is open to current city employees who are permanent in the civil service title of 'Steam Fitter's Helper', or to those who have registered to take exam #5132. **

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The Building Maintenance Section (BMS) Is responsible for the repair and maintenance of over 250 Department facilities citywide. In 2023, BMS accepted 36,384 different types of job requests and responds to emergencies 24 hours per day, while also being responsible for numerous and varied command buildouts that supported Department initiatives.

Under direct supervision, the selected candidate will perform the following duties:

• Assists in doing work relating to piping and equipment for heating, air conditioning, compressed air and processing systems;
• Assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of piping and equipment in air, steam and hot water heating, air conditioning and processing systems;
• Assists in the installation of boilers, feedwater, vacuum and condensate equipment;
• Assists in the installation of fuel oil piping and related equipment;
• Assists in taking on-the job measurements and lays out work from plans, specifications and/or sketches;
• May drive a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties; and
• Performs related work.

Minimum Qualifications

• Three years of full-time satisfactory mechanical experience as a Steam Fitter’s Helper acquired within the last 10 years; or
• At least one and one-half years of full-time satisfactory mechanical experience as a Steam Fitter’s Helper acquired within the last 10 years plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade, vocational or technical high school to make up the equivalent of three years of acceptable experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade, vocational or technical school.

Preferred Skills

• Experience is a must - The ability to evaluate and handle multiple projects and priorities - Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills needed
