Job summary

NORC at the University of Chicago is seeking a qualified Statistician I to join the Statistics and Data Science department in a hybrid Washington, DC office (or Chicago Loop). This role supports AmeriSpeak and other NORC survey research across health, society, economics, and education projects.

The position requires a Master’s degree in statistics or related field, proficiency in R, and experience with survey statistics, sampling, weighting, and variance estimation.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in statistics, biostatistics, survey methodology, mathematics, data science, computational social science, or a related field required.
  • Coursework or applied experience in survey statistics, including sampling, weighting, variance estimation, statistical inference, or survey data analysis. Experience with complex survey data preferred.
  • Strong foundation in mathematical statistics, probability, estimation, inference, modeling, and study design.

Responsibilities

  • Support AmeriSpeak survey operations and methodology, including sample selection, weighting, variance estimation, nonresponse analysis, survey data processing, quality control, and statistical analysis.
  • Write and implement programs to extract/manipulate data, perform statistical analyses, and implement weighting.
  • Assist with survey statistics tasks, including sample frame preparation and panel processes.
  • Contribute to statistical sections of reports for technical clarity and address project research questions.
  • Contribute to study design materials for reports, proposals, and technical documentation.
  • Develop programs for data cleaning, transformation, validation, and documentation.
  • Apply reproducible research practices and version control in analyses.
  • Create dashboards and data visualizations to communicate findings clearly.
