WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING DAY TO DAY

As a Statistician (Health), you will:

  • Independently plan, execute, and control statistical studies designed to identify and analyze complex health-related issues, specifically focusing on mental health and substance use prevalence, surveillance, and treatment utilization.
  • Conduct analytic research projects by defining research questions and selecting appropriate databases to support scientific investigations.
  • Apply advanced statistical techniques such as logistic regression, survival models, complex sampling, and analysis of variance to analyze public health data.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Basic Qualifications:

You must meet one of the items listed below:

  • A. Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.
  • B. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
  • AND Minimum Qualifications: You must have one year of specialized experience to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service performing ALL of the following:
    • Analyzing public health issues and public health policies through scientific studies, data analysis and surveys.
    • Conducting a search or review of the existing literature and data in a scientific area; prepares summaries for a variety of purposes; and monitors all aspects of data collection activities.
    • Utilizing statistical software to conduct data analyses; drafting reports reflecting data analysis findings and trends.

OR

  • Possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree.

OR

  • Have a combination of experience and education that meets 100% of the qualification.
