Job summary

California Department of Public Health (CDPH) seeks a Plant Operations Stationary Engineer to maintain and repair heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation, and other building systems at the Richmond Campus in Contra Costa County.

You will work under the Chief Engineer II, possibly supervise other staff, coordinate with contractors, and benefit from on-site work with opportunities for advance pay differentials and certifications.

Job Description And Duties

This position supports the CDPH’s mission and strategic plan by performing a variety of skilled work in the operations, maintenance, and repair of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration systems, ventilation, lighting, power, water treatment, and other mechanical systems in support of the CDPH, Richmond Campus. The Stationary Engineer may instruct and/or lead other Stationary Engineers, Maintenance Mechanics, Building Maintenance Workers, and Service Assistants. In addition, this position may direct contractors in support of the infrastructure and equipment repairs.

The incumbent works under the general direction of the Chief Engineer II.

The Following Pay Differentials Are Applicable To This Position

• Pay Differential 85 Night Shift: Shifts required to work 4 or more hours between 10pm and 6am are entitled to night shift pay (an extra $2/hour)
• Pay Differential 409 Greater Bay Area Recruitment and Retention: provides 5% above the base rate for each qualifying pay period
• Pay Differential 435 EPA Section 608 Technician Certification: $100/month for the required certification

Examination

In July 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program (PLP 2025). This program temporarily reduces employees’ monthly base pay in exchange for paid leave credits. This position is subject to PLP 2025 and will have a monthly base pay reduction of 3% in exchange for 5 hours of leave credits through June 2027.
