Job summary

Frederick Health is seeking a Stationary Engineer for an on‑call/as‑needed role. You will operate and maintain the boiler plant, perform inspections, and support other trades as required. You will ensure safe, clean, and efficient facility operations while upholding FH standards.

The role requires a Maryland 1st/2nd Class Engineer license (or equivalent) and proven boiler/plant experience. Shift work includes evenings, nights and weekends with appropriate differential where applicable.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair basic 480 volt, 3 phase motor control circuits using test equipment.
  • Read and interpret mechanical, electrical and plumbing drawings.
  • Maintenance and repair of ventilation and temperature control systems including programmable controllers.
  • Proficiency with computers including Microsoft Office, Energy Management and Maintenance Management software.
  • Skilled with hand and power tools.

  • Assist with Boiler Plant Operation and maintain steam and chill water.
  • Keep accurate logs and operate equipment efficiently.
  • Respond to routine maintenance calls during shift and complete maintenance promptly.
  • Troubleshoot and repair emergency problems and document issues for supervisor.

Job description

Seeking a Stationary Engineer to work on an as needed basis. All shift availability (7a - 3p, 3p - 11p, - 11p - 7a). Additional Shift Differential for Evening, Nights and Weekends.

Job Summary

Working under the general direction of the Manager of Plant Operations and/or the Director of Plant Operations, thePlant Engineer is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the boiler plant and auxiliary equipment, performing the inspections, ensuring efficient operation, maintenance, and repair as required. As needed, theFirst Engineer will also assist other trades.

ThePlant Engineer works semi-independently with leeway to resolve facility issues and customer concerns, while ensuring good public relations and department image through personal contacts and assurance of quality standards to provide exceptional customer service, and a safe, functional, clean, efficient and attractive environment.

Supports, and is responsible for incorporating into job performance, the Frederick Health (FH) mission, vision, core values and customer service philosophy and adheres to the FH Compliance Program, including following all regulatory requirements and the FH Standards of Behavior.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair basic 480 volt, 3 phase motor control circuits utilizing electrical test equipment.
  • Must be able to read and interpret mechanical, electrical and plumbing drawings.
  • Ability to maintain and repair ventilation and temperature control systems including programmable controllers.
  • Proficiency with the use of a computer including Microsoft Office, Energy Management and Maintenance Management software.
  • Skilled with all types of hand and power tools.
Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Required
  • High School graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Trade or military school preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license, to include a copy of driving record. Applicants must not have more than five violation points on their record or any D.U.I violations.
  • Maryland 1st Class Engineer’s license or 2nd Class Engineer and four (4) years’ experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of high-pressure boilers, chillers, pumps, cooling towers and auxiliary plant equipment.

Physical Demands:

Medium-Heavy Work - Lifting up to 75 pounds on an infrequent basis (less than one lift every three minutes) and/or carrying up to 35 pounds while walking. Pushing or pulling up to 115 pounds infrequently or greater than 115 pounds occasionally (no more than once per hour).

Repetition: Repeating the same motion over and over again places stress on the muscles and tendons. The severity of risk depends on how often the action is repeated, the speed of the movement, the required force and muscles involved.

Forceful Exertion: The amount of physical effort required to perform a task (such as moving patients) or to maintain control of equipment or tools. The amount of force depends on the type of grip, the weight of an object or person, body posture, the type of activity and the duration of the task.

Awkward Posture: Posture is the position your body is in and its effect on the muscle groups that are involved in the physical activity. Awkward postures include repeated or prolonged reaching, twisting, bending, kneeling, squatting, working overhead with your hands or arms, or holding fixed positions.

Contact Stress: Pressing the body hard on sharp edges can result in placing too much pressure on nerves, tendons, and blood vessels. For example, using the palm of your hand to hit or stick objects can increase risk of musculoskeletal disorders.

Vibration: Operating vibrating tools such as sanders, grinders, chippers, routers, drills and other items can lead to nerve damage.

Reporting Relationship:

Reports to the Plant Operations Manager; receives oversight and direction from Director, Plant Operations.

Pay is based on experience, skills and education. If position is part-time, salary will be pro-rated based on scheduled hours. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on specialty if applicable. Non-Exempt positions may have shift differential and/or Overtime paid, if applicable.

Hourly range: $30.82 to $44.17
