Job summary

GBMC is seeking a skilled boiler room operator to manage boilers, chillers, pumps, and related equipment under general supervision at the GBMC campus. The role requires vigilance, meticulous record-keeping, and the ability to troubleshoot to keep systems running safely.

You will perform routine inspections, monitor the Energy Management System, log readings, and collaborate with Maintenance staff to maintain peak efficiency and reliability across all plant operations.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma is required and must be current.
  • 1 year of related experience operating/maintaining a large steam and refrigeration plant.
  • Maryland First Grade license and Maryland driver's license are required.
  • Ability to read and follow written/oral instructions and operate boiler room equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Observes boilers and related equipment continuously to ensure operation per instructions.
  • Makes scheduled inspections of all equipment and piping; listens for unusual sounds and checks for malfunctions.
  • Maintains a log of gauges and meters (steam, water, gas, air pressure).
  • Tests water systems and adds chemicals to prevent buildup of scale and corrosion.
  • Monitors EMS and makes adjustments per program.
  • Relays service calls to Maintenance Engineer or Mechanic and logs them.
  • Performs housekeeping and painting to maintain a safe work area.
  • Responds to service calls across GBMC campus as required.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on all plant equipment and systems.

Under general supervision, but according to established procedures, operates power plant equipment such as boilers, chillers, pumps, compressors, and all related auxiliaries.

Education
  • High School diploma
Licensures/Certifications
  • Valid State of Maryland First Grade license
  • Valid State of Maryland driver's license
Experience
  • 1-year related experience in the operation and/or maintenance of a large steam and refrigeration plant required to gain expertise necessary to troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment and fully understand boiler equipment operation
Skills
  • Skill in data analysis and interpretation
  • Ability to read, understand and follow written and oral instructions and operate and make minor repairs to boiler room equipment
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair commercial HVAC equipment, commercial refrigerators, ice machines. Ability to accomplish light building maintenance repair.
Principles Duties and Responsibilities
  • Observes boilers and related equipment (meters and gauges) continuously to ensure that operation is in accordance with specified instructions
  • Makes scheduled inspections of all equipment and piping, listening for unusual sounds and checking for malfunctions. Make corrective repairs as needed and reports major problems to the supervisor
  • Maintains a schedule log on all gauges and meters such as steam, water, gas and air pressure
  • Tests water systems for proper residual chemical levels and adjusts by adding predetermined chemicals to systems, to prevent buildup of scale and corrosion
  • Monitors and makes necessary adjustments to Energy Management System (EMS) computer system per program
  • Takes and relays service calls to Maintenance Engineer or Maintenance Mechanic and logs same
  • Performs housekeeping and painting duties in plant areas to provide a safe work environment
  • Responds to service calls in all areas of GBMC campus as required
  • Performs preventive maintenance on all plant equipment and systems as required

Pay Range

$30.06 - $49.29

Final salary offer will be based on the candidate's qualifications, education, experience and alignment with our organizational needs.
