Job summary

California Department of General Services in Sacramento, CA seeks a Stationary Engineer to operate, maintain and repair boiler, heating, refrigeration, ventilation, and other mechanical systems in State buildings.

Under supervision, you will respond to service requests, attend trainings, coordinate with staff, and prepare requisitions for supplies. Applicants must have 4 years of related experience and 700 hours of formal technical instruction in Stationary Engineering.

Qualifications

  • Four years of experience operating, maintaining and repairing boiler, heating, refrigeration, ventilation and power equipment in large buildings.
  • 700 hours of formalized technical instruction in Stationary Engineering or an AA/Certificate substitution as specified.
  • Two years of additional qualifying experience may substitute for the required education.

Job description

Are you a seasoned professional in facilities and mechanical systems?

The Department of General Services (DGS) is seeking a dynamic Stationary Engineer to join our Facilities Management Division (FMD) in Sacramento, CA.

Under the general direction of the Chief Engineer II, the Stationary Engineer in the Facilities Management Division (FMD), Joe Serna Jr. Building / CalEPA HQ performs a variety of skilled work in the operation, maintenance and repair of heating, air conditioning, ventilating, lighting, power, water, water treatment, and other mechanical systems in State-owned and occupied buildings in accordance with FMD guidelines and manuals.

As the Stationary Engineer, you will:

  • Operate, repair, and maintenance of heating, ventilation, HVAC, power, water, and other mechanical systems and equipment
  • Respond to service requests and/or emergency calls
  • Attend job specific trainings in the handling of hazardous materials or other related topics
  • Communicate with building staff regarding contracts, repair notices, etc.
  • Prepare requisitions including quotes and proposals for supplies, products, tools
  • Maintain, service, repair and dispose of state equipment that contains refrigerant

To be successful in the role, you must meet the qualifications below:

  • Four years of experience performing duties which included the operation, maintenance and repair of boiler, heating, refrigeration, ventilation and power equipment of large commercial, industrial or institutional buildings including the operation and maintenance of air conditioning systems involving the use of automatic controls. and
  • Education: Completion of 700 hours of formalized technical instruction relating to Stationary Engineering in training offered by such established programs as: Job Corps; Skill Centers; ROP; Trades Schools; Military; and JTPA (Joint Training Partnership Act). (An Associate of Arts or Certificate in Mechanical Electrical Technology, which must have included at least 12 semester units of instruction in heating, ventilation, and refrigeration systems involving the use of automatic controls may be substituted for the 700 hours of technical instruction). Students who are within six months of completing their degree will be admitted to the months of completing their degree will be admitted to the examination, but they must present evidence of completion prior to appointment.
  • Two years of additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education.
