Job summary

Maryland Office of the Public Defender (MOPD) is seeking a visionary Attorney Trainer to lead statewide training, curriculum design, and mentorship for public defenders across Maryland. This role blends high-level curriculum development with intensive litigation coaching and opportunities to co-counsel complex cases.

The Attorney Trainer will design programs that take new attorneys from orientation to complex felony trials, using adult-learning models and dynamic trial advocacy techniques, while

Qualifications

JD from an accredited law school.
Five (5) years of active criminal defense litigation experience, including handling felony trials and complex litigation.
Experience designing and delivering CLE or advocacy training is a plus.

Responsibilities

Design and facilitate foundational and advanced legal education programs, including orientation and core partnerships.
Provide one-on-one coaching and review written advocacy and trials.
Conduct statewide needs assessments and track metrics for skill retention.
Collaborate with District Public Defenders and specialized divisions to integrate advanced theories into training materials.
Track attendance, manage certification credits, and complete agency data reporting.
