Job summary

The Maryland Office of the Public Defender (MOPD) is seeking an exceptional Attorney Trainer to lead statewide training and mentorship for public defenders. You will design high-performance trial advocacy curricula, coach attorneys, and co-counsel complex cases when needed, driving systemic equity in Maryland’s criminal defense landscape.

Based in the Training Division HQ with statewide reach, you will mentor new attorneys through orientation to felony trials, using modern adult-learning models

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
• Five (5) years of active criminal defense litigation experience, including felony trials and complex litigation.

Responsibilities

• Curriculum design and instruction for foundation and continuing legal education, including New Attorney Orientation.
• One-on-one coaching of attorney mock performances and courtroom trials with structured feedback.
• Co-counsel complex trials with junior attorneys for live mentorship.
• Statewide needs assessments and metrics to track retention of trial skills.
• Collaborate with public defender partners and specialized divisions to incorporate advanced sciences into defense.
