What role you will play in our team

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced State Tax Counsel to take on complex challenges within a Fortune 50 multinational corporation. You will manage a multi‑jurisdiction portfolio of state and local tax matters. Keys to success include collaboration and effective communication with tax department colleagues and management, corporate finance and business unit personnel, state tax officials and outside counsel.

Business line and finance managers will look to you for guidance regarding state tax implications of major transactions, legislative and regulatory developments, audit matters, and tax savings opportunities. What will you do
  • Advise on state and local tax planning opportunities arising from business transactions, restructurings, and operational changes.
  • Research and analyze complex state tax issues and develop practical, business‑focused solutions.
  • Lead and support state tax controversy matters, including audits, appeals, administrative proceedings, and litigation.
  • Monitor and assess legislative, regulatory, and judicial developments affecting the company’s state tax profile.
  • Partner with business, legal, finance, and tax teams to manage state tax risks and maximize value.
About you

We are seeking an attorney with a strong background in state and local tax planning and controversy who possesses the following qualifications.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Minimum of 7 years of state and local tax experience, including tax planning, controversy, or multistate tax advisory work.
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one state.
  • Strong knowledge of state income and franchise taxation principles, including nexus, apportionment, and sourcing.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex tax issues and communicate practical recommendations to business and tax stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications / Experience
  • Tax LL.M. preferred.
  • Experience representing clients before state taxing authorities or supporting state tax controversy matters.
  • Experience advising multinational or multistate businesses on state tax planning initiatives.
  • Familiarity with state tax implications of mergers, acquisitions, restructurings, and legal entity simplification projects.
  • Experience evaluating the state tax consequences of evolving business models, supply chains, and commercial transactions.
  • Adds value by collaborating effectively with colleagues, clients, and other support functions.
  • Shares knowledge to develop capabilities of the whole team.
  • Excellent legal research, technical writing, and advocacy skills.
