Job summary

Americans United for Separation of Church and State is seeking a Policy Counsel (or Senior Policy Counsel) to help advance state policy goals in collaboration with the Public Policy team. The role emphasizes state-level advocacy, legal research, and coalition work to promote church-state separation.

The position offers hybrid work from home and office in the Washington, DC area, with opportunities to engage federal policy as needed and contribute to strategic litigation objectives.

Qualifications

• Minimum 1–2 years of work experience; 7+ years may qualify for Senior Policy Counsel.
• Experience with advocacy, legal research, analysis, and coalition work.
• Licensed to practice in DC or eligible and willing to join the DC Bar.

Responsibilities

• Draft policy and advocacy materials, letters, backgrounders, talking points, and reports.
• Research, analyze legal and policy issues; develop strategies to meet policy goals at state and federal levels.
• Coordinate cross-departmental advocacy with policy, organizing, communications, and legal teams.
• Represent AU with partners, coalitions, and policymakers to build support for policy goals.
• Track and analyze pending legislation and regulations related to church-state separation.
• Provide expert analysis and collaborate to educate the public and support litigation goals.
