Job summary

Americans United for Separation of Church and State seeks a Senior Litigation Counsel or Litigation Counsel to lead church-state cases nationwide and collaborate with a dynamic team to advance rights and public policy. You will manage matters from investigation through appeal and coordinate with pro bono partners and allied public-interest groups.

This remote or hybrid role requires strong writing, oral advocacy, and a commitment to advancing the public interest, diversity, and inclusion.

Qualifications

• At least three years of litigation experience; senior level typically ten years to become Senior Litigation Counsel.
• Experience serving as lead counsel or ability to take that role for litigation.
• Strong analytical and writing skills; persuasive oral advocacy.

Responsibilities

• Serve as lead counsel in church-state cases nationwide.
• Serve as principal counsel in co-counseled cases with pro bono teams or public-interest partners.
• Draft/edit pleadings, take depositions, deliver oral arguments, conduct trials and appeals.
• Develop new cases by researching facts and law, formulating strategies, identifying plaintiffs.
• Draft/edit amicus briefs and evaluate opportunities to file briefs.
• Mentor junior lawyers and interns.
• Make public-speaking and media appearances.
• Help set strategic direction for AU’s litigation program.
• Collaborate across departments and partners to lead or support advocacy campaigns.
