Library of Michigan is seeking a State Librarian to serve as the chief administrative officer, providing critical leadership and directing strategic, financial, operational, and personnel activities of the Library of Michigan.

The position is located at the Library of Michigan, 702 West Kalamazoo Street, Lansing, MI, with a hybrid schedule allowing in-person and remote work.

Job description

The MichiganDepartment of Education (MDE) provides leadership, resources, support, and guidanceto approximately 200,000 school district staff serving approximately 1.5million students in public and non-public schools and 39,000 students inspecial education transition services. In addition, MDE provides administrativesupport and supervision for the Michigan School for the Deaf and the Library ofMichigan.

MDE is responsible for stateeducation leadership in a local control state and works to implement state andfederal education laws, disburse state and federal resources, licenseeducators, develop state summative assessments and accountability systems, createstate academic standards, and coordinate school health and nutrition programs.In addition, in developing and promoting the state’s Top 10 Strategic EducationPlan, MDE works with partner education entities and stakeholders to improvepublic education for children across the state. MDE’s role in the improvementof public education extends to providing information and feedback to publicpolicy-makers, convening educators on public policy issues, recommending draftlanguage on legislation, and developing guidance to districts on statutorychanges adopted at the state and federal levels.

The library's responsibility has expanded toinclude a comprehensive collection of Michigan related documents, journals,books, and other materials.

Position is located at the Library of Michigan, 702West Kalamazoo Street, Lansing, MI. Hybrid flexible schedule of in-person andremote work arrangement.

The State Librarian serves as chief administrative officer, provides critical leadership, and directs strategic, financial, operational, and personnel activities of the Library of Michigan; is a member of the department’s leadership team and the deputy superintendent’s admin directors leadership team; serves as secretary on the Library of Michigan’s advisory Board of Trustees; and serves as a board member of the Library of Michigan Foundation. The state librarian is the guardian of the quality of library services statewide and actively facilitates cooperation among and between libraries of all types within the state and with library related organizations.
