Job summary

Doeren Mayhew seeks a Senior Tax Associate for our State and Local Tax (SALT) team. The role supports a diverse client base and contributes to a growing SALT practice across multiple offices, including Troy, Grand Rapids, Houston, Duluth, Rochester, Birmingham, Orlando, and Clarksville.

You will prepare and review SALT filings, perform research, support audits, and craft planning strategies while mentoring staff and coordinating with other departments to deliver full client service.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or master's degree in accounting, taxation, or related field.
• CPA or CPA track preferred but not required.
• 2 years of experience in state and local tax, preferably in public accounting or consulting.

Responsibilities

• Prepare or review state and local sales tax returns, personal property tax returns, C‑corporation, S‑corporation, and Partnership income returns.
• Conduct research and provide technical advice on state and local tax issues.
• Assist clients with state and local tax audits, including audit defense and negotiation.
• Develop and implement tax planning strategies to minimize state and local tax liabilities.
• Stay current on state and local tax laws and regulations and communicate changes to clients and team members.
• Research technical matters related to state and local tax.
• Mentor and train staff members, providing guidance and support in their professional development.
• Collaborate with other departments to ensure comprehensive client service.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and CCH Axcess/GoSystem Tax, Avalara/Vertext/TaxJar, or TaxScribe, as relevant
• Located within commuting distance of one of the Michigan, Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Florida or Tennessee offices.
