Job summary

Doeren Mayhew seeks a Senior Tax Associate to join our State and Local Tax (SALT) team. The ideal candidate has SALT compliance and consulting experience, can manage multiple projects, and supports offices in Troy, Grand Rapids, Houston, Duluth, Rochester, Birmingham, Orlando or Clarksville.

The role requires a Bachelor's or Master’s in accounting or taxation, with CPA track preferred, and about 2 years of SALT experience in a public accounting or consulting setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or master's degree in accounting, taxation, or related field.
• CPA or CPA track preferred but not required.
• 2 years of SALT tax experience in public accounting or consulting is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of state and local tax laws and regulations.
• Excellent analytical, research, written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Prepare or review state and local tax returns (sales tax, personal property tax, C‑corp, S‑corp, and partnerships).
• Provide technical SALT tax research and advice.
• Assist clients with SALT audits, including defense and negotiation.
• Develop tax planning strategies to minimize SALT liabilities.
• Stay current on SALT laws and communicate changes to clients and team.

Doeren Mayhew is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Tax Associate to join our State and Local Tax (SALT) team. The ideal candidate will have a background in state and local tax compliance, and consulting in income tax, property tax, or sales tax. This role offers the opportunity to work with a diverse client base and to contribute to the growth and success of our Grand Rapids, Michigan-based SALT practice. This position is available in our Troy, MI; Grand Rapids, MI; Houston, TX; Duluth, GA; Rochester, NY; Birmingham, AL; Orlando, FL or Clarksville, TN offices.

Responsibilities

• Prepare or review state and local sales tax returns, personal property tax returns, C-corporation, S-corporation, and Partnership income returns
• Conduct research and provide technical advice on state and local tax issues
• Assist clients with state and local tax audits, including audit defense and negotiation
• Develop and implement tax planning strategies to minimize state and local tax liabilities
• Stay current on state and local tax laws and regulations and communicate changes to clients and team members
• Research technical matters related to state and local tax
• Mentor and train staff members, providing guidance and support in their professional development
• Collaborate with other departments to ensure comprehensive client service

Qualifications

• Bachelor's and/or master’s degree in accounting, taxation, or a related field
• CPA or CPA track preferred, but not required
• 2 years of experience in state and local tax, preferably in a public accounting or consulting firm
• Knowledge of state and local tax laws and regulations
• Excellent, analytical, problem-solving, and research skills, and written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and CCH Axcess/GoSystem Tax, Avalara/Vertext/TaxJar, or TaxScribe, as relevant
• Located within commuting distance of one of the Michigan, Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Florida or Tennessee offices.
