About the role
We are building the next generation of solid‑state, grid‑interactive power blocks that enable high‑density, flexible power delivery for datacenters, renewable energy systems, and advanced microgrids.
The Standards / Certification Engineer is responsible for ensuring that Solid‑State Transformer (SST) and microgrid solutions comply with applicable U.S standards, certifications, codes, and regulatory requirements.
This role serves as a technical authority on grid interconnection, power electronics compliance, and certification strategies, working closely with R&D, product management, quality, and external certification bodies to ensure successful product development and market entry.
The ideal candidate has deep knowledge of power conversion systems, grid‑interactive equipment, and evolving microgrid standards, with hands‑on experience navigating certification processes across multiple geographies.
Key responsibilities
US Standards & Regulatory Leadership
- Interpret and apply US-specific standards and grid codes applicable to SSTs, converters, and microgrid systems.
- Act as the internal expert on UL, IEEE, ANSI, and NEC requirements related to grid-interactive power electronics.
- Monitor changes in US regulations, utility interconnection rules, and standards updates, and assess their impact on product roadmaps.
Certification & Compliance Execution
- Develop and own US certification strategies for SST and microgrid products.
- Lead product certifications with UL, CSA (US), Intertek, and other NRTLs.
- Define and review certification test plans (safety, grid compliance, EMC, environmental).
- Support laboratory testing, troubleshoot test failures, and drive corrective actions.
- Review and approve certification reports and compliance documentation.
Grid Interconnection & Utility Requirements
- Ensure compliance with IEEE 1547 / 1547.1 for grid interconnection, including grid-support functions.
- Support utility acceptance processes and respond to utility technical questionnaires.
- Interface with utilities, EPCs, and customers on compliance and interconnection questions.
Design & Engineering Collaboration
- Provide standards-driven design guidance to power electronics, control, and system engineers early in the development cycle.
- Translate regulatory requirements into actionable design inputs and verification plans.
- Support risk assessments for new architectures, voltage classes, and deployment models.
Documentation & Audits
- Declarations of Conformity
- Technical construction files
- Certification records and labeling requirements
- Support internal audits and external regulatory reviews.
Industry & Standards Participation
- Represent the company in IEEE, UL, and industry working groups related to microgrids, SSTs, and advanced distribution systems.
- Track emerging standards impacting medium‑voltage power electronics and grid modernization.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Controls, or a related field
5+ years of experience in power electronics engineering, power system design, controls integration, industrial automation, or hardware / controls product management
- Strong knowledge of US standards, including but not limited to:
- IEEE 1547
- IEEE 1662 / IEEE 1676
- UL 508C
- NEC (NFPA 70) requirements impacting power equipment
Experience translating complex engineering requirements into clear, structured product specifications
Familiarity with DER integration and industrial or grid communication protocols
Ability to interpret technical standards and communicate requirements clearly to engineering teams.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems.
- Direct experience with:
- Microgrid systems (grid-following, grid-forming, islanded operation)
- Medium-voltage power electronics or SST architectures
Experience supporting utility-scale or commercial/industrial microgrids in the US.
Familiarity with FERC, state-level interconnection frameworks, and utility rulebooks.
- Knowledge of:
- EMC compliance (FCC Part 15, IEC 61000 as adopted in US certifications)
- Functional safety concepts (IEC 61508 or related)
- Cybersecurity considerations for grid-connected equipment (e.g., NERC, utility requirements)
Active participation in IEEE, UL STPs, or industry consortiums.
Experience supporting products from prototype through commercial release.
