Qualifications

• Availability for after-school and weekend commitments (tech weeks, rehearsals, performances, and strike).
• Proven experience directing musical theater productions (experience with high school or youth theater is highly preferred).
• Strong understanding of acting techniques, stagecraft, musical theater repertoire, and theater technical aspects (lighting, sound, set design).
• Exceptional communication, time-management, and conflict-resolution skills; ability to motivate and manage large groups of teenagers.

Responsibilities

• Provide artistic direction and vision for the spring musical.
• Select a production in consultation with advisors and administration.
• Develop cohesive artistic vision including staging, blocking, and character development.
• Conduct auditions and callbacks; manage production logistics and rehearsals.

Overview

The Spring Musical - Director reports to the Principal or designated Administrator. Stamford High School is seeking a visionary, collaborative, and student-centric Spring Musical Director for the 2026-2027 academic year. The Director will oversee all artistic and dramatic aspects of the annual spring musical production, leading a talented student cast and crew while fostering a safe, inclusive, and high-energy environment for creative growth.

Key Responsibilities

• Artistic Direction & Vision
• Select an appropriate musical production in consultation with the club advisors, production team, and school administration.
• Develop a cohesive artistic vision for the show, including staging, blocking, and character development.
• Conduct fair, organized, and transparent auditions and callbacks to cast the production.
• Production & Rehearsal Management
• Establish and maintain a detailed rehearsal schedule (typically running from January through production dates April/May 2027).
• Lead regular after-school and occasional weekend rehearsals. Coordinate closely with the Music Director, Pit Conductor, Choreographer, and Technical Director to ensure a seamless integration of all production elements.
• Student Mentorship & Safety
• Foster a supportive, respectful, and disciplined environment that encourages student growth, teamwork, and confidence.
• Provide instructional guidance in acting, storytelling, rehearsal etiquette, and theatrical performance techniques appropriate for high school students.
• Supervise students during all rehearsals, tech weeks, and performances, ensuring compliance with Stamford Public Schools safety policies.
• Administrative & Community Relations
• Manage the production budget in coordination with the club advisors and school’s fiscal officer.
• Oversee or assist with licensing, scripts, and score acquisitions.
• Collaborate with parent booster groups, volunteers, and school staff on marketing, ticket sales, playbill creation, and front-of-house logistics.

Qualifications & Requirements

Availability: Must be available for after-school and weekend commitments (including rehearsals, tech weeks, performances, and strike.). Rehearsals are typically from 2:30 - 5:30 PM every day until tech weeks.

Experience: Proven experience directing musical theater productions (experience working with high school or youth theater is highly preferred).

Knowledge: Strong understanding of acting techniques, stagecraft, musical theater repertoire, and the technical aspects of theater (lighting, sound, set design).

Skills: Exceptional communication, time-management, and conflict-resolution skills. Ability to motivate and manage large groups of teenagers.

Clearances: Must pass standard Stamford Public Schools background checks, fingerprinting, and DCF clearance
