Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in tax roles, ideally with sales & use tax exposure.

Job description

An established energy company in Houston is seeking a Staff Tax Accountant – Sales & Use Tax to join their accounting team. This position offers the opportunity to develop your tax expertise in a supportive environment, while also working independently on core responsibilities tied to compliance, reporting, and audit support.

This is a great role for someone with a foundational understanding of sales and use tax who is eager to grow and be mentored by experienced professionals.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare tax schedules, calculations, and adjusting journal entries for sales & use tax.
• Reconcile general ledger accounts related to sales & use tax.
• File monthly, quarterly, and annual sales & use tax reports and process corresponding payments.
• Assist in the preparation of state income and franchise tax returns, including annual reports and payments.
• Support sales & use tax audits by gathering documentation and working with internal departments.
• Research and interpret tax laws and regulations as needed.
• Respond to tax authority notices and correspondence.
• Help manage offsite tax records storage.
• Participate in special projects and initiatives related to indirect taxes.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the tax function.

Preferred Skills & Experience

• Experience in oil and gas taxation is a plus, but not required.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
• Experience with accounting and tax software (e.g., P2/Oracle, tax compliance platforms) is a plus.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently while also collaborating in a team environment.
• CPA license is preferred but not required.

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required (concentration in Taxation preferred).
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in a tax-related role, ideally with exposure to sales & use tax.
