The Staff Software Development Engineer will play an instrumental role in shaping the digital account experience for over 100 million ID.me customers and building the identity layer of the internet.

The Verification Infrastructure team is responsible for developing and maintaining shared services for encryption and events as well as providing a standardized interface to vendor-based verification functionality used throughout ID.me. The team is looking to design and build ID.me’s next generation vendor orchestration platform. This platform will serve as the backbone of our verification ecosystem, enabling seamless coordination and management of multiple vendor services to deliver unparalleled scalability and efficiency.

We are seeking an experienced backend engineer to drive the design and development of a Vendor Platform. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in building scalable APIs, SDKs, and developer-focused platforms, ensuring high availability, security, and extensibility. They will have strong software engineering skills and will collaborate closely with Product teams to build and deliver scalable solutions aligned with organizational goals. It also requires collaboration with external vendors or partners to evaluate and integrate third-party solutions when appropriate.

This is a high-impact role where you’ll shape the next-generation identity verification platform, enabling secure and seamless interactions for millions of users. You’ll work on cutting-edge backend systems, API design, and developer experiences, solving complex challenges in scalability, security, and orchestration. The position will work from our Mountain View, CA office five days per week.

Responsibilities
  • Architect, develop, and maintain backend systems for the Vendor Orchestration Platform, ensuring seamless integration of identity verification providers.
  • Design and build scalable APIs that enable product teams to efficiently interact with multiple third-party identity vendors.
  • Develop SDKs and developer tooling to simplify integration and improve the developer experience across internal and external teams.
  • Implement vendor-agnostic workflows that allow flexible orchestration of identity verification services based on business rules, compliance needs, and real-time decisioning.
  • Optimize system performance by designing resilient, fault-tolerant architectures with low-latency API calls and scalable data pipelines.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product managers, security engineers, and infrastructure teams to define requirements and deliver high-impact solutions.
  • Mentor and guide engineers, setting best practices for backend development, API design, and platform scalability.
  • Raise the bar for technical excellence, engineering best practices, testing strategies, and distributed system design through pairing, mentoring, architecture / code reviews, technical presentations, and knowledge sharing sessions.
  • Own end-to-end deliverables through committing quality code and overseeing the work of others, with sound judgment to know what is appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • At least 8+ years of professional software development experience, with a strong background in backend development.
  • At least one year of experience in Identity Verification or Phone Verification or Face Verification or Document Verification
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in fraud detection, risk analysis, or authentication technologies.
  • Experience with probability analysis and statistical modeling.
  • Strong knowledge of identity resolution techniques, fuzzy matching, and record linkage algorithms.
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems, microservices architectures, and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, agile environment.
  • Contributions to open-source identity resolution projects or published research in the field.
  • Experience working in highly regulated industries such as finance, healthcare, or government services

The annual base salary listed does not include a company bonus, incentive for sales roles, equity and benefits which will be determined based on experience, skills, education, relevant training, geographic location and role.

The above represents the anticipated total rewards package for this job requisition. Final offers may vary from the amount listed based on qualifications, professional experiences, skills, education, relevant training, geographic location, and other job related factors.

U.S. Pay Range $183,367 — $214,500 USD Mountain View, CA Pay Range $217,565 — $260,000 USD
