Marqeta is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Core Edge Processing team. You will write and review production code at the heart of our processing systems, driving initiatives to make them faster and more reliable in a real-time payment infrastructure.

The role is remote within Canada, with a chance to mentor engineers, shape designs, and work on complex, critical codebases in a cloud-native, high-availability environment. Strong Java and experience in payments are essential.

As Marqeta’s Staff Software Engineer on the Core Edge Processing team, you will write and review production code at the heart of our processing systems, drive the initiatives that make them faster and more reliable, and help set the engineering bar for a team running real-time, always-on payment infrastructure. Core Edge Processing owns the systems that route and authorize transactions across card networks, along with the cryptographic infrastructure underneath them. This is a hands-on role where the quality of your code directly shapes whether transactions succeed.

We work Flexible First. This role can be performed remotely anywhere within the province where you reside, whether that’s Ontario or British Columbia, Canada. We’d love for you to join us!

The Impact You’ll Have

• Ship and refine production code across our routing and processing stack, where every millisecond and every line counts

• Lead initiatives that make our platform more reliable, faster, and more cost-efficient

• Shape system design alongside your EM and fellow engineers, from data model changes to failure and degradation strategy to blast-radius containment

• Take on complex, mission-critical codebases and lift the engineering standard for everyone around you

• Mentor engineers and guide technical direction at the Staff level

Who You Are

• An engineer with 8+ years of experience who is still deep in the code every day

• A Java expert with strong fundamentals in concurrency, performance, and building reliable systems at scale

• Someone who writes system designs, defends them in review, and runs what you build in production

• At home in a regulated, cloud-native, high-availability environment

• Experienced in payment processing, card issuing, or network integration (JPOS, ISO 8583, or similar)

Nice-To-Haves

• Cryptography or key management experience (HSM, AWS Payment Cryptography, KMS)

• Experience running systems across multiple regions, including tested failover

• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes and AWS

Compensation and Benefits

Marqeta calibrates pay to a competitive value according to working location. When determining salaries, we consider several factors including, but not limited to, skills, prior experience, and work location. The new-hire base salary range for this full-time position, reflected in CAD, is: $156,800 - $196,000
