Job summary

Western Union is seeking a Staff Software Engineer who will lead design and delivery of scalable, cloud-native microservices powering its digital platform. This role acts as a hands-on technical expert and service owner, partnering with distributed engineering teams to ensure reliability, performance, and architectural excellence.

You will mentor juniors, review designs, enforce SLAs, and drive improvements across multiple teams using AWS, Kafka, and modern patterns.

Qualifications

• BS in Computer Science or related field with 5+ years of professional experience.
• Proven experience in Java Spring Boot, DynamoDB or Postgres, Kafka, Redis, and Apache Camel.
• 2+ years as a hands-on technical lead designing and implementing large-scale microservices.
• Experience with Agile, TDD, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Ability to communicate architectural concepts to diverse teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and delivery of scalable cloud-native microservices.
• Serve as service owner and drive reliability and performance.
• Coach junior engineers and collaborate with distributed teams.
• Review designs and enforce service-level standards.
• Troubleshoot and coordinate issue resolution with cross-functional teams.
• Build applications and internal tools using AI coding agents.
• Assess business needs and provide creative technology solutions.
