Job summary

General Motors is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to modernize and scale its embedded build system. You will lead transitioning from legacy Make-based workflows to Bazel, designing scalable infrastructure across repositories, toolchains, and CI/CD processes for safety-critical automotive software.

Responsibilities include defining migration strategy, building reusable Bazel components, and ensuring reproducibility and security across releases while mentoring teams and driving productivity

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in software engineering or equivalent experience.
• 12+ years of software development experience.
• Deep understanding of real-time software architecture for safety-critical products.
• Experience shipping automotive/embedded software.
• Experience migrating build systems to Bazel or similar tooling.
• Experience with AI-assisted developer productivity and workflow orchestration.

Responsibilities

• Lead productivity improvements and coach teams across projects.
• Modernize build and test system from legacy Make to Bazel.
• Define phased Bazel migration strategy and rollout model.
• Design reusable Bazel rules, macros, and toolchains for embedded software.
• Integrate Bazel with enterprise CI/CD, testing, releases, and security workflows.
• Measure success by build parity, reduced CI queues, and reproducibility.
• Improve diagnosis, artifact provenance, and security for releases.
