Job summary

General Motors is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for Developer Experience in a hybrid Austin/Detroit setting. You will drive productivity through platforms, automation, and AI-assisted workflows, while mentoring engineers across IT. This role emphasizes data-driven improvement of developer experiences and cross-team collaboration.

The DevEx team focuses on scalable tooling, golden paths, and measurable outcomes to reduce friction in the SDLC and accelerate software delivery at GM.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in software development.
• Proficiency in one or more modern languages (Java/Go/C#/Python/TypeScript).
• Experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems.
• Strong knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and release processes.
• Hands-on with developer platforms and SDLC tooling.
• Cloud platform experience (Azure/AWS/GCP) and IaC.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical strategy and delivery for platforms, tools, and workflows to improve developer productivity, quality, and satisfaction across GM.
• Design and implement golden paths for shipping software—repo structure, CI/CD, testing, security, observability, deployment.
• Build automation and self-service capabilities that reduce manual toil (env provisioning, pipeline setup, guardrails).
• Embed AI into engineering workflows, including agents and copilots for planning, coding, testing, docs, and operations.
• Partner with product, security, infra, and applications teams to translate pain points into tooling improvements.
• Act as a multiplier and mentor, guiding engineers on software engineering, AI-assisted development, and best practices.
• Define and track outcome-focused metrics (lead time, PR cycle time, change failure rate, developer satisfaction).
• Contribute to engineering standards and reference architectures across Core IT and beyond.
