Job summary

The Hartford in Columbus, OH is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to drive architecture, mentor engineers, and deliver cloud-native claims solutions. The role blends hands-on coding with technical leadership across AWS, AI capabilities, and DevOps practices.

You will design scalable services, lead AI/agentic initiatives, and collaborate with product owners and data scientists to improve claims processing while working hybrid on-site three days a week.

Qualifications

• Authorized to work in the US without sponsorship.
• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
• Hands-on experience with Generative AI and Agentic AI technologies including LLMs, AI agents, prompt engineering, vector databases, RAG architectures, and AI orchestration frameworks.
• Strong proficiency in Python and/or Java, with production-grade backend services and APIs.
• Extensive AWS experience including Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, SQS/SNS, API Gateway, IAM.
• Experience building frontend with Angular.
• RESTful API design, microservices, and event-driven systems.
• Terraform IaC experience.
• CI/CD tools experience (Jenkins, GitHub Actions).
• Strong fundamentals in software engineering and secure coding practices.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and development of scalable, cloud-native applications and microservices on AWS for claims processing.
• Architect and implement Generative AI and Agentic AI solutions including LLM integration and AI orchestration.
• Hands-on technical leadership: write production code, code reviews, and standards setting.
• Collaborate with product owners, architects, data scientists, and stakeholders to translate requirements into robust solutions.
• Mentor and coach junior engineers and foster engineering excellence.
• Drive DevOps practices including CI/CD, Terraform, testing, and observability.
• Evaluate new technologies to improve productivity and reliability.
• Contribute to claims platform architecture ensuring security and enterprise scalability.
• Partner with Claims IT teams to maintain standards and tooling.
