Job summary

ModMed is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to anchor our engineering organization, driving architectural decisions, standards, and the technical direction of our core platforms. You will act as a "Tech Lead of Tech Leads" across squads to solve complex distributed system challenges, while mentoring senior engineers and partnering with Product and Engineering leadership.

As an IC, you will still code 40-50% of the time, architect foundations, and build domain-specific harnesses to scale

Qualifications

• 12+ years of software engineering experience with at least 3+ years at Senior, Lead, or Staff level.
• Java mastery with 8/11/17+ experience, including memory management, concurrency, and JVM tuning.
• Spring ecosystem expertise: Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Spring Security.
• Extensive AWS cloud experience (ECS/EKS, Lambda, API Gateway, SQS/SNS, RDS, DynamoDB).
• Proven distributed systems design, event-driven architectures, RESTful/gRPC APIs.
• Technical leadership and influence: drive cross-functional alignment and mentor engineers.
• Strong SQL (PostgreSQL/MySQL) and NoSQL data modeling.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Git, CI/CD pipelines.

Responsibilities

• Technical Strategy & Architecture: design and architect healthcare applications using Java and AWS.
• Hands-on engineering with ~40-50% coding for critical paths and POCs.
• Define and enforce coding standards, patterns, and quality gates; lead architecture reviews.
• Mentor Senior and Mid-level engineers through code reviews and design discussions.
• Own reliability, observability, and performance of production systems (CI/CD, monitoring, alerts).
• Translate complex concepts into business value for stakeholders and collaborate with Product Managers.
• Design AI training & execution harnesses to fine-tune and deploy domain-specific models.
• Develop reusable AI 'skills' and toolsets to enable AI-driven engineering tasks.

Job Description Summary:

We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to serve as a technical anchor for our engineering organization. In this role, you will move beyond individual contribution to drive architectural decisions, set engineering standards, and lead the technical direction of our core platforms.

You will act as a "Tech Lead of Tech Leads," working across squads to solve complex distributed system challenges while ensuring our platform remains scalable, secure, and performant. While this is an Individual Contributor (IC) role, you will be expected to mentor senior engineers and partner closely with Product and Engineering leadership. As a Staff Engineer, you won't just use AI tools-you will architect the foundations, developer harnesses, and domain-specific skills that make AI a reliable, high-impact force multiplier across our entire engineering organization.

Key Responsibilities:

• Technical Strategy & Architecture: Design and architect healthcare application using Java (Spring Boot) and AWS . You will be the "go-to" person for the hardest technical challenges..


• Hands-on Engineering: While you will lead design, you are expected to stay hands-on (approx. 40-50% coding), writing critical path code, POCs, and reviewing complex PRs.


• Tech Leadership: Define and enforce coding standards, design patterns, and quality gates. Lead technical grooming sessions and architecture reviews.


• Mentorship: Elevate the team's technical bar. Mentor Senior and Mid-level engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and design discussions.


• Operational Excellence: Champion DevOps culture. Own the reliability, observability, and performance of production systems (CI/CD, monitoring, alerting).


• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Translate complex technical concepts into business value for stakeholders. Work with Product Managers to assess feasibility and trade-offs.


• Architect AI Training & Execution Harnesses: Design and build robust, scalable developer harnesses and evaluation pipelines (Evals) to fine-tune, evaluate, and deploy domain-specific AI models and agents safely and efficiently.


• Design & Systematize "AI Skills": Translate complex domain knowledge and proprietary business logic into structured, reusable toolsets, prompt frameworks, and APIs ("skills") that enable AI models to perform specialized engineering and business tasks.

Mandatory Qualifications (The "Must-Haves"):

• Experience: 12+ years of software engineering experience with at least 3+ years operating at a Senior, Lead, or Staff level.


• Java Mastery: Deep expertise in Java (8/11/17+), including memory management, concurrency/multithreading, and JVM tuning.


• Spring Ecosystem: Expert-level knowledge of Spring Boot , Spring Cloud, and Spring Security.


• AWS Cloud Native: Extensive experience designing systems on AWS. You should be comfortable with ECS/EKS, Lambda, API Gateway, SQS/SNS, RDS, and DynamoDB .


• System Design: Proven track record of architecting distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and RESTful/gRPC APIs that handle high throughput.


• Technical Leadership & Influence: Proven ability to drive cross-functional alignment, propose long-term technical strategies, and mentor engineers across multiple squads through shift-changes in tech stack or paradigms.


• Database: Strong proficiency in SQL (PostgreSQL/MySQL) and NoSQL modeling.
