Job summary

Modernizing Medicine, Inc. seeks a Staff Cloud Engineer to drive scalable AWS cloud infrastructure across data streaming, DB, and application development domains. You will set standards, mentor teams, and foster secure, observable systems with IaC patterns.

Based in Boca Raton, FL with 3 days in the office, you will collaborate across architecture groups to accelerate adoption of event-driven, microservices-based solutions while balancing cost and security considerations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required in CS/IT or related field.
• 8+ years in Cloud Engineering, SRE, or similar roles in large public cloud environments.
• Extensive AWS experience (EC2, S3, IAM, VPC).
• Proficiency with Terraform, Helm, and Kubernetes.
• Programming proficiency in Python, Java, or Go.
• Eligible for on-call rotation when needed.

Responsibilities

• Lead standardized, secure, scalable cloud infrastructure and guardrails for rapid production deployment.
• Drive technical strategy in Data Streaming, Database, and AWS Applications Development domains.
• Implement IaC modules with Terraform or Ansible and promote reusable patterns.
• Enhance observability with DataDog to detect issues and optimize resources.
• Mentor engineers and participate in architecture discussions at Boca Raton HQ.

Job Description Summary

As a Staff Cloud Engineer, you will spearhead efforts to ensure the scalability, reliability, and performance of our AWS cloud infrastructure. This role is designed for high-level individual contributors who will lead one of three specialized domains: Data Streaming (Kafka), Database Architecture, or AWS Applications Development. You will define and implement best practices for cloud architecture and service utilization across a broad portfolio of applications. You will contribute to our event-driven evolution, safeguard data integrity, and refine our deployment pathways. This position requires a consistent presence in our Boca Raton, FL office (3 days/week) to foster high-bandwidth collaboration and mentorship.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with staff and architect groups to produce standardized, secure, and scalable cloud infrastructure, guardrails, and best practices for development teams to deploy safely and quickly to production, with an emphasis on developer self-service.
• Lead technical strategy in the following areas:
  • Data Streaming: Architect, build, and operate high-throughput event-driven systems using technologies like Apache Kafka; enforce best practices with development teams and ensure integration into the platform.
  • Database: Architect, build, and operate high-throughput systems using AWS Aurora, RDS, and NoSQL; lead migrations, sharding strategies, and performance tuning; ensure best practices are engineered into the platform.
  • AWS Applications Development: Serve as cloud lead for a subset of applications to guide their evolution toward efficient and standardized consumption of public cloud services, including migration toward microservices on Kubernetes.
• Implement and refine monitoring solutions using observability tools (DataDog) to identify issues proactively and optimize resource utilization.
• Lead the development of reusable Infrastructure as Code (IaC) modules using Terraform or Ansible to eliminate manual configuration.
• Ensure strict adherence to AWS security standards and data protection regulations (SOC2/HIPAA) while balancing cost considerations.
• Mentor junior and senior team members, fostering a culture where engineers are technical leaders in their areas of expertise.
• Engage in face-to-face architectural white-boarding and cross-functional planning from the Boca Raton headquarters.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience.
• Minimum 8 years in Cloud Engineering, SRE, software engineering, or a similar role with a proven track record in large-scale public cloud environments (AWS preferred).
• Extensive experience managing AWS services (EC2, S3, IAM, VPC, Route53) or similar in another cloud platform.
• Deep proficiency with Terraform, Helm, and other cloud-native technologies.
• Proficiency in a high-level language (Python, Java, Node, Go, or similar).
• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes at scale.
• Demonstrated mastery in at least one specialized area (Distributed Streaming, Relational/Non-relational Databases, or AWS application development).
• Able to participate in an occasional on-call rotation to address high-priority production issues.
