Staff Software Engineer| AI-native engineering, on real hardware keeping food out of landfill | SF Bay Area (Onsite) | $210K–$250K base

We have partnered with a connected hardware company in the Bay Area, building a consumer appliance with a climate mission. Tens of thousands of units are already installed in homes, a commercial version for grocery and food service follows, and the company is well past the risky stage, backed by top-tier climate funds and strategic corporate investors.

The web stack is SvelteKit on Vercel, with TypeScript and Node on serverless AWS. AI-assisted development is not a pilot running alongside the real work, it is how the team writes, reviews and ships. If that is already how you build, this is a team where it is the standard rather than the thing you keep having to justify.

The role

A senior individual contributor seat with technical leadership attached, reporting to the Director of Software Engineering. You will:

Lead the technical design and delivery of full stack web applications, choose the tooling that lifts the team, own the estimates and flag risk early.

Write durable code across the stack, and support the native mobile side when it is needed.

Set the standard for how the team uses AI tooling to write, review and ship.

Partner with your product manager on scope, sequencing and tradeoffs, and mentor engineers through sharp code review, testing and CI/CD.

This is not a management track today. There are no direct reports, and the door is open as the team grows.

About you

Eight or more years of professional software engineering, most of it full stack.

Strong on the backend in TypeScript and Node, comfortable with serverless on AWS Lambda, and solid across SQL and NoSQL. CDK and Middy are a plus.

Fluent in a modern frontend framework. The team is on SvelteKit, and strong React experience transfers.

You use AI tooling as an engineer rather than as a demo, and you can describe one thing you changed about how your team reviews or ships code because of it.

One of these fits you: a senior engineer or tech lead from a product-led startup, an engineer from a connected-devices company who has worked alongside firmware teams, or a strong generalist who has put AI-assisted development at the centre of how they build.

You are in the Bay Area and able to work on site daily.

Existing work authorisation is required. An H-1B transfer or TN is fine, but a new petition cannot be sponsored.

$210,000 to $250,000 base plus an equity grant, and the team is moving quickly.
