Job summary

Intuit in Bloomington, IL is seeking a Staff Software Engineer (Backend) to architect and build enterprise-grade SaaS applications for QuickBooks customers. You will work with Java, Spring Boot, AWS, Kubernetes, Elasticsearch, and Kafka on a high-impact platform.

The role blends hands-on coding (40-60%) with system design, mentoring, and cross-functional collaboration across product, QA, and business units.

Qualifications

• 8+ years designing and developing online SaaS backend systems.
• 5+ years building web services with REST or SOAP.
• BS/MS in computer science or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Architect and develop online SaaS backend applications and prototypes.
• Lead gathering of functional requirements, develop technical specifications, and project & test planning.
• Mentor engineers, demonstrate technical expertise, and lead a small team solving challenging programming and design problems.
• Roughly 40-60% hands-on coding; rest on system design, operational excellence and mentoring junior engineers.
• Generate technical documentation and presentations to communicate architectural options and educate teams.
• Resolve defects and patches during QA, pre-production, production, and post-release.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product, QA/QE, and business units to drive results.
• Demonstrate passion for well-architected, scalable web/mobile apps.
• Experience with Agile Development, SCRUM, or XP methodologies.

Overview

Come join the QuickBooks Capital & Lending platform team as a Staff Software Engineer (Backend). You will join an innovative and passionate team of engineers using cutting edge technologies like Java, Spring Boot, Kubernetes, AWS, Elastic Search, Kafka, to build enterprise scale software for our QuickBooks customers. We are looking for an engineer with a background in back-end web technologies (Java/Kotlin, Spring, REST services, etc.)

Responsibilities

• Architecting and developing online web applications, prototypes, or proofs of concepts (POCs)
• Leading the gathering of functional requirements, developing technical specifications, and project & test planning
• Acting as the technical subject matter expert: Mentoring fellow engineers, demonstrating technical expertise, and leading a small team solving challenging programming and design problems
• Roughly 40-60% hands-on coding. Rest focused on System design, operational excellence and coaching/mentoring junior engineers.
• Generate technical documentation and PowerPoint presentations to communicate architectural and design options, and educate development teams and business users
• Resolve defects/bugs during QA testing, pre-production, production, and post-release patches
• Work cross-functionally with various Intuit teams including product management, QA/QE, various product lines, and/or business units to drive forward results
• Demonstrate a passion for developing well architected, elegant, web and/or mobile apps
• Experience with Agile Development, SCRUM, or Extreme Programming methodologies

Qualifications

• 8+ years experience designing and developing online SaaS applications (Backend).
• Strong leadership experience: Leading meetings, presenting, technical go to person, and cross-functional leader
• BS/MS in computer science or equivalent work experience
• Expertise with the following: Java/J2EE, SQL, AWS and other backend development technologies. Proficient with AI coding tools (Cursor, Claude or Codex)
• Expertise with the entire Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
• 5+ years experience with web services (consuming or creating) with REST or SOAP
• Excellent communication skills: Demonstrated ability to explain complex technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Expertise in the Software design/architecture process
• Expertise with unit testing & Test Driven Development (TDD)
• Business Acumen - strategic thinking & strategy development
• Building strong teams - set and evangelize vision, facilitative leadership, attract and retain key talent
• Experience in handling On-call responsibilities & production incidents for large scale, high throughput SaaS applications. Be a proponent of building systems for performance and scale.
