Wisdom AI is hiring a Staff Product Designer in San Mateo, CA (onsite) to shape product experience across multiple areas. This role focuses on tackling ambiguous, high-stakes AI design challenges from early framing through launch and ongoing iteration, with an emphasis on design craft and building user trust. You will partner closely with the VP of Design, evolve the design system, and mentor designers as the team raises the quality bar.
What you’ll do
- Set the product experience vision across multiple areas, translating it into clear direction that PMs and engineers can build toward.
- Own the hardest problems: frame them with customers and leadership, explore the solution space, and carry work through launch and iteration.
- Shape the roadmap with product and engineering leadership, using customer insight and design exploration to influence what gets built, not only how.
- Design moments where complexity becomes clarity, including trustworthy AI answers, data visualizations, and artifacts spanning dashboards, apps, and presentations, plus intelligent analytical agents that work on users’ behalf.
- Ensure product coherence by defining interaction patterns and principles so chat, apps, agents, and visualizations feel like one system.
- Lead the evolution of the design system and its foundations, partnering with engineering on building and adoption.
- Prototype early and often using AI tools, and establish team standards for how AI is used, including sharing prompts, patterns, and process.
- Mentor designers through crits, pairing, and direct feedback, raising craft standards across what the team ships.
- Help shape how design works across R&D, including rituals, quality bar, and collaboration with product and engineering.
- Contribute to team growth by shaping who the company hires and the culture designers join.
- Talk directly with customers, treating research as velocity rather than a gate.
What you bring
- 8+ years designing exceptional products, ideally in B2B, data, AI, or other complex domains, including experience leading work across multiple product areas.
- Exceptional visual craft and taste, with attention to detail down to meaningful “1px” decisions.
- Mastery of typography, color, spacing, and hierarchy, with a focus on interfaces that feel effortless and hold up over daily use.
- A portfolio showing both product vision and execution, including work where you defined direction, simplified complex systems, and shipped.
- Systems thinking: you design patterns and frameworks others build on, and you can point to decisions that shaped an entire product.
- A track record of influence without authority, such as changing roadmap direction, aligning leadership, or setting team standards.
- Experience mentoring designers and raising quality across a team.
- A strong appetite for designing with AI, with hands-on experience with LLMs and AI prototyping tools strongly preferred. If you are not fully there yet but are eager to work this way, they want to hear from you.
Tools you’ll use
Figma, Paper, Claude, Cursor, LLMs
Nice to have
- You code, or consider yourself part design engineer, with familiarity in components, states, and how interfaces get built.
- Deep experience with data visualization and strong opinions about it.
- Experience building or leading a design system and understanding how shared components scale.
- Led design on fast-moving product teams where iteration and momentum matter.
- Been an early design hire or helped build a design team from the ground up.
- Managed designers, or you are ready to.
