Job summary

Lightmatter is hiring a Staff Photonics Design and Layout Engineer to floorplan, design, and layout block- and chip-scale photonic circuits. You will support products through development cycles from concept to tapeout and bring-up, ensuring performance targets are met.

You will collaborate with photonics, product, architecture, analog, digital and packaging teams to verify blocks meet design targets and contribute to PDK development while publishing novel results at conferences.

Qualifications

• MS + 10 years or PhD + 3 years in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, or related discipline.
• Excellent understanding of silicon photonics fundamentals.
• Familiarity with a wide variety of silicon photonics devices and their performance metrics.
• Proficiency with Python.
• Experience with script-based photonic circuit design and layout using GDSFactory or similar.
• Demonstrated track record of multiple photonic tapeouts.
• Excellent communication and cross-disciplinary collaboration skills.
• Ability to independently handle highly constrained and loosely defined problems.

Responsibilities

• Understand product requirements and collaborate with customer-facing teams to identify optimal photonics solutions.
• Design and layout block- and system-level photonic circuits from scratch.
• Coordinate with analog, digital and packaging teams for seamless on-chip integration.
• Perform layout-driven photonic simulations and verification to identify bottlenecks and troubleshoot issues.
