Job summary

Waymo is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to own end-to-end hardware for critical sensor systems, guiding architecture, prototyping, tooling, and mass production.

You will apply first-principles engineering to navigate optical, thermal, and structural tradeoffs in harsh real-world environments while collaborating closely with electrical, manufacturing, vehicle, and industrial design teams to develop modules that meet business needs.

Qualifications

• BS in Mechanical Engineering and 7+ years in consumer electronics, automotive sensors, or related product design.
• Proficient in 3D CAD tools Catia V6 and Solidworks.
• Experience designing metal, plastic, and elastomer parts with GD&T knowledge.
• Ability to apply first-principles physics to complex design constraints.

Responsibilities

• Own the hardware end-to-end for critical sensor systems, from architecture to mass production.
• Design for reality by balancing optical, thermal, and structural tradeoffs in harsh environments.
• Collaborate with electrical, manufacturing, vehicle, and industrial design teams.
• Create robust parts and manage tolerance analysis, BOMs, and PLM releases.
