Job Description

FUNCTIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

I. Provides direct nursing care to patient/families.

A. Identifies patient population through referrals for that population.

  • Assesses health status and identifies health care needs by assessing patient’s lifestyle, capacities, pain management and functional status.
  • Develops comprehensive nursing care plan.
  • Provides nursing care.
  • Provides patient/family instruction to disease process and nursing plan (treatment, side effects).
  • Serves as a contact to patients by providing counseling and crisis intervention as needed.
  • Documents action in patient chart in progress notes.
  • Facilitates continuity of care within the health care system.
  • Administers direct nursing care when necessary.

B. Serves as a patient/family advocate.

II. Prepares and administers cytotoxic drugs to assigned patients utilizing aseptic techniques

A. Administers and monitors effects of chemotherapeutic agent.

B. Maintains a log of chemotherapy and any drug toxicity/side effects.

C. Keeps and inventory of chemotherapeutic agents and equipment.

D. Teaches and evaluates patient’s understanding of anticipated side effects and toxicities of chemotherapy.

E. Review and interprets routine laboratory data and reports any abnormalities to the assigned physician.

F. Participates in clinical research drug protocols.

G. Collects specimens (blood, urine, etc.) for evaluation of patient status as needed.

H. Performs transfusions when necessary according to MHC protocol.

I. Perform cytopharesis.

III. Serves as a consultant to nursing staff, physicians and other health care members in this area of specialty

A. Consults with health care members and communicates standards of nursing practice.

B. Plans and/or participates in interdisciplinary patient care conferences, weekly tumor board meetings, oncology/hematology clinics and cancer team meetings.

C. Assists nursing staff to deal with cancer related problems, chemotherapy side effects, plan control, supportive care to patients, cancer prevention, etc.

D. Attends hospital-wide committees representing area of specialization.

E. Collaborates with ADON in the formation of standards of care.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
  • Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
