Staff Nurse - Operating Room

Position Purpose

The Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the Operating Room for all patient populations by utilizing Nursing Care Plans. Collaborates with physicians, medical professionals, and other staff to meet the physical and psychosocial needs of the patient. Involves appropriate parties (e.g., patient’s family or guardian, outside agencies) in assessment, treatment, and ongoing care. Supports the Mission, Vision, and Values of Doctors Community Hospital.

Role Specific Competencies

  1. Adheres to professionalism standards:
    • Serves as a role model/resource for team members, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
    • Identifies personal strengths and development needs.
    • Addresses active/potential problems with appropriate solutions, taking responsibility for judgments and actions.

    • Participates in orientation and training of new personnel.

    • Willing to cover varying shifts as needed.
  2. Delivers quality nursing care to surgical patients:
    • Plans patient care based on scheduled cases and surgeon’s preferences.
    • Demonstrates competence in assessing, treating, and caring for pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients perioperatively.
    • Assesses physiological and psychosocial health of patients and families.
    • Provides education to patients and families.
    • Prepares equipment and supplies based on patient needs and surgeon’s preferences.
    • Ensures safe patient positioning and appropriate admission/discharge procedures.
    • Follows aseptic techniques and maintains a safe environment.
    • Performs nursing actions with accountability.
    • Coordinates OR personnel to ensure efficient case progression.
    • Delegates effectively and uses critical thinking in crises.
    • Maintains accurate documentation, including implant logs and charges.
  3. Demonstrates skills and knowledge for quality care:
    • Maintains clinical competency checklist.
    • Attends required in-services and staff meetings.
    • Follows infection control practices.
    • Participates in performance evaluations and sets professional goals.
  4. Develops and implements a plan of care:
    • Protects patients from injury from various sources.
    • Performs sponge, sharp, and instrument counts.
    • Follows Universal Time-Out Protocols.
    • Handles specimens per protocols.
    • Communicates patient status throughout care continuum.
    • Maintains organ system stability and normothermia.
    • Creates and monitors sterile fields.
    • Administers drugs and solutions per standards and legal requirements.
    • Monitors patient physiologically during surgery.
  5. Supports nursing staff activities:
    • Assists with room turnover and environmental support.
    • Returns unused supplies and assists with patient transfer and positioning.
    • Reports to operations seeking additional responsibilities.
    • Reacts confidently to changing priorities and emergencies.
  6. Performs professional development activities:
    • Participates in orientation and training.
    • Involves in developing standards of practice.
    • Seeks leadership roles and responsibilities.
  7. Performs special assignments and stocking functions:
    • Assists with restocking and checking supplies.
    • Reports equipment issues and assists with maintenance.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

  • CNOR preferred.
  • Current ACLS, CPR/BLS required.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program; BSN preferred.
  • Knowledgeable of AORN standards and universal precautions.
  • Maintains current Maryland or compact state RN license.
  • Minimum two years OR experience preferred.
  • Technical skills for OR environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Focus on detailed tasks with interruptions.
  • Full body motion including lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Sitting, standing, walking for long periods.
  • Operate based on conceptual understanding of tasks.
