The Registered Nurse (RN) II is a professional caregiver responsible for a group of patients during a designated time frame. The RN II provides care through the therapeutic use of self, the nursing process, the environment, instrumentation, and collaboration with other healthcare team members.
Responsibilities include:
- Performing ongoing assessments/data collection focusing on physiologic, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, and cognitive status, as well as nutrition, pain, patient/family education, family involvement, and patient advocacy.
- Formulating goal-directed care plans when appropriate.
- Implementing care in a thorough, skillful, consistent, and continuous manner.
- Establishing care priorities based on patient needs and available resources such as time, personnel, equipment, and supplies.
- Identifying and meeting patient/family learning needs.
- Demonstrating awareness and sensitivity to patient/family rights, age-specific needs, cultural, and ethical beliefs.
- Providing and coordinating care for patients and patient populations.
- Building effective working relationships with healthcare team members, patients, and families.
- Respecting staff rights and cultural and ethical beliefs.
- Delegating tasks appropriately and coordinating duties within the healthcare team.
- Evaluating the effectiveness of care provided by team members.
- Utilizing effective communication skills, following lines of authority as appropriate.
- Applying safety principles and demonstrating knowledge of emergency protocols.
- Performing efficiently in emergency situations, remaining calm, informing appropriate personnel, and documenting events.
- Taking responsibility and accountability for one's own professional practice.
- Participating in staff development activities regularly.
- Understanding legal issues, including patient confidentiality and risk management.
- Participating in quality improvement activities and nursing research as requested.
- Identifying and solving problems effectively.
- Demonstrating a service-oriented approach in all interactions.
- Providing data for staffing decisions and demonstrating flexibility, including floating to other units when requested.
- Proficiency in computer use and telecommunication modalities, including navigating electronic medical records.
- Performing other related duties as necessary.
- Formulating prioritized, goal-directed care plans based on nursing diagnoses and patient outcomes.
- Identifying and addressing patient/family learning needs with appropriate measures.
- Demonstrating sound knowledge and actions in caring for designated patient populations.
- Documenting patient care and unit activities accurately and timely.
- If no qualified candidate is available, training may be provided in the specialty areas, with certification requirements within 6 months of hire or transfer.
