Job description

The Registered Nurse (RN) II is a professional caregiver responsible for a group of patients during a designated time frame. The RN II provides care through the therapeutic use of self, the nursing process, the environment, instrumentation, and collaboration with other healthcare team members.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Performing ongoing assessments/data collection focusing on physiologic, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, and cognitive status, as well as nutrition, pain, patient/family education, family involvement, and patient advocacy.
  2. Formulating goal-directed care plans when appropriate.
  3. Implementing care in a thorough, skillful, consistent, and continuous manner.
  4. Establishing care priorities based on patient needs and available resources such as time, personnel, equipment, and supplies.
  5. Identifying and meeting patient/family learning needs.
  6. Demonstrating awareness and sensitivity to patient/family rights, age-specific needs, cultural, and ethical beliefs.
  7. Providing and coordinating care for patients and patient populations.
  8. Building effective working relationships with healthcare team members, patients, and families.
  9. Respecting staff rights and cultural and ethical beliefs.
  10. Delegating tasks appropriately and coordinating duties within the healthcare team.
  11. Evaluating the effectiveness of care provided by team members.
  12. Utilizing effective communication skills, following lines of authority as appropriate.
  13. Applying safety principles and demonstrating knowledge of emergency protocols.
  14. Performing efficiently in emergency situations, remaining calm, informing appropriate personnel, and documenting events.
  15. Taking responsibility and accountability for one's own professional practice.
  16. Participating in staff development activities regularly.
  17. Understanding legal issues, including patient confidentiality and risk management.
  18. Participating in quality improvement activities and nursing research as requested.
  19. Identifying and solving problems effectively.
  20. Demonstrating a service-oriented approach in all interactions.
  21. Providing data for staffing decisions and demonstrating flexibility, including floating to other units when requested.
  22. Proficiency in computer use and telecommunication modalities, including navigating electronic medical records.
  23. Performing other related duties as necessary.
  24. Formulating prioritized, goal-directed care plans based on nursing diagnoses and patient outcomes.
  25. Identifying and addressing patient/family learning needs with appropriate measures.
  26. Demonstrating sound knowledge and actions in caring for designated patient populations.
  27. Documenting patient care and unit activities accurately and timely.
  28. If no qualified candidate is available, training may be provided in the specialty areas, with certification requirements within 6 months of hire or transfer.
