Overview
Staff Mobile Engineer (Contract) The Staff Mobile Engineer is a unique and vital role within Madison Reed, owning the mobile experience that has become the primary daily touchpoint for our customers. This role involves architecting and leading the development of our React Native application across iOS and Android, driving the technical strategy for mobile, and contributing to the organization's long-term architectural vision. Working in a cross-functional, agile environment, the engineer collaborates with teammates, product owners, designers, and stakeholders to ship a premium, native-feeling experience for our full e-commerce, appointment, and membership business — while mentoring engineers at all levels and fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence. This is an AI-forward role where the Staff Mobile Engineer builds AI-powered experiences into the app and works with frontier agentic coding tools, while auditing and owning all shipped work. The role is based in the United States on a contract basis with a base rate range of $80-$85/hr and a 40-hour work week.
What You’ll Do
- Own the mobile platform end-to-end: architect, build, and ship our React Native application across iOS and Android, making foundational technical decisions that shape the mobile experience.
- Drive mobile technical strategy: identify opportunities for innovation and lead the adoption of new technologies, tools, and patterns.
- Build AI-powered mobile experiences: surface personalized recommendations, enable agent-driven interactions, and integrate LLM-backed features into native interfaces.
- Leverage the Expo ecosystem as a product advantage: manage EAS builds, configure custom native modules via config plugins without ejecting, and ship OTA updates; maintain and extend native modules for Live Activities, biometrics, beacons, AR features, and payments.
- Champion mobile UX and performance: focus on frame rates, navigation, list rendering, keyboard handling, and accessibility standards.
- Own reliability in production: manage CI/CD, crash monitoring, analytics, and App Store / Play Store release processes with strong monitoring and error-tracking.
- Lead large, ambiguous initiatives: break work into actionable streams and align with business goals and long-term scalability.
- Mentor and raise the bar: establish patterns for code reuse, perform rigorous code reviews and testing, and foster technical excellence and knowledge sharing.
- Collaborate with product and leadership to align technical solutions with business priorities and how they are built.
What We're Looking For
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience focusing on React Native and Expo.
- Proven track record of building, shipping, and maintaining complex, data-heavy mobile applications at scale.
- Expo and mobile infrastructure expertise: EAS builds, complex native modules, OTA updates, and navigation App Store/Play Store considerations.
- Mastery of mobile state and performance: React render cycle on mobile, UI-thread optimization, advanced list rendering, and TypeScript with platform-specific considerations.
- Full lifecycle ownership: CI/CD, crash rates, and app behavior in production.
- Experience with AI-assisted workflows and frontier coding tools, with ability to audit and own output.
- Demonstrated technical leadership with scalable, maintainable architecture and mentorship.
- High-ownership mindset, bias toward action, comfort with ambiguity, and strong product intuition.
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills with low ego and high standards.
Bonus Points
- Experience integrating LLMs, AI agents, or ML features into production mobile apps.
- Native iOS/Android experience for native module work; familiarity with Live Activities and biometric authentication.
- Background in e-commerce, subscriptions/memberships, payments, or appointment systems.
- Experience with AR / virtual try-on, location services, or push/lifecycle messaging.
- Open-source contributions or shipped apps.
