Job summary

Uber's Marketplace Matching team seeks a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to define and build the next generation of matching optimization systems. You will own major optimization charters, set technical direction, and lead 0→1 problems from formulation through large-scale production deployment.

This role requires strong expertise in ML, RL, and sequential decision-making, with a focus on pragmatic production-ready solutions across a two-sided marketplace.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in a quantitative field.
• 8+ years in industry ML, or 6+ with PhD.
• Extensive experience building large-scale production ML systems with online inference.
• Strong fundamentals in ML including DL, RL and decision-making under uncertainty.
• Ability to translate ambiguous problems into tractable ML or decision problems and drive to production.
• Experience leading cross-functional, technically complex initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Set technical direction for Uber's real-time matching optimization and ML systems.
• Design matching objectives and policies balancing marketplace goals.
• Develop production ML decision systems for sequential and multi-agent environments.
• Apply RL, probabilistic modeling, DL, causal inference to large-scale problems.
• Explore model predictive control and feedback control for dynamic matching.
• Build behavioral models of rider/driver responses and incorporate into optimization.
• Develop simulation, experimentation, and causal measurement frameworks.
