Job summary

Nuro is seeking a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to be a technical leader on the Behavior & Planning team. You will drive ML initiatives from research to on-vehicle deployment, tackling foundation and world models, LLM/VLM reasoning, and planning for robotaxi, delivery, and personal vehicles.

This role demands ownership: set direction, mentor engineers, and collaborate across Perception, Simulation, Evaluation, ML Infra, and Research to deliver safe, scalable autonomy.

Qualifications

• 7+ years building and deploying ML systems with multi-team initiatives.
• MS/PhD in CS/AI/ML/Robotics or equivalent practical experience.
• Strong foundations across model architectures, training, evaluation.
• Experience with Python (required) and/or C++.
• Ability to lead initiatives and collaborate across teams.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership on the autonomy stack and drive ML initiatives with minimal oversight.
• Design, train, and productionize state-of-the-art models across foundation/world models, RL/IL, and planning.
• Generalize models to new cities/geographies (U.S. and global) and different vehicle platforms.
• Collaborate across Perception, Simulation/Evaluation, ML Infra & Data, and Research to deliver holistic autonomy solutions.
• Own the full model lifecycle from data to on-road evaluation and iteration.
