Job summary

Rivian’s Autonomy organization is seeking a Staff Software Engineer, ML Applications in the Data & Cloud team to direct large-scale applications and data pipelines powering data annotation and ML training.

You will align engineering, ML, and data partners on architecture, roadmaps, and standards while building reliable software on petabyte-scale sensor datasets. This role emphasizes cross-functional leadership and technical excellence.

Qualifications

• BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or related field with 6+ years of experience; or 8+ years without a degree.
• Strong full-stack background with TypeScript and modern web stacks; track record shipping complex internal apps.
• Deep backend experience in Python, Go, or Java on high-throughput or large-data systems.
• Proven ability to lead multi-service or platform-scale design and mentoring experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead development of Rivian’s in-house 2D/3D labeling platform for high-quality data for model training.
• Define full-stack platform direction (TypeScript, React) for internal tools used in ML workflows.
• Coordinate backend services and APIs (Go/Python) across teams; set data contracts and service boundaries.
• Guide data modeling/storage strategy with MongoDB, assessing performance, cost, and consistency.
• Collaborate with architects, ML/data engineers on requirements, architecture and design.
• Drive cloud cost, performance, reliability; promote SLOs and observability; drive incident learning.
• Mentor junior engineers and strengthen engineering practices.
