Job summary

General Motors in Warren, MI and Mountain View, CA is seeking a Staff Mechanical Hardware Engineer for display packaging and A-surface integration. You will lead in-house mechanical design, analysis, and testing for the next generation SDV architecture.

Responsibilities include CG&T, material selection, and close collaboration with electrical engineers, PCBA designers, and Tier 1 suppliers. Hybrid work model offered with travel up to 25%.

Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 10+ years in design and development of styled electronics or appearance-grade plastic parts.
  • Strong collaboration across functions and teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design of displays per program timing and launch.
  • Create 3D/2D CAD models and lead reviews with stakeholders.
  • Perform design calculations, GD&T, and tolerance stacks.
  • Select materials for displays and interfaces to vehicle.
  • Develop test plans and lead prototyping and testing.
  • Collaborate with electrical/PCBA teams for integration.
  • Analyze test data and drive design changes.
  • Partner with suppliers to align on display design.
  • Communicate progress and risks to leaders.

## Staff Mechanical Hardware Engineer - DisplaysApplyremote type: Hybridlocations: Warren, Michigan, United States of America: Mountain View, California, United States of Americatime type: Full timeposted on: Posted Todayjob requisition id: JR-202612849**Job Description**We are seeking a high-performing Staff Mechanical Design Engineer interested in leading the in-house development of GM display mechanical design. You will be responsible for the mechanical design, development, analysis and review of Display packaging, A-surface development along with B-side integration (clips, screw bosses, etc.) for our next generation SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) architecture. You will be depended upon to build strong partnerships with internal and external customers.What You’ll do:* Execute mechanical design of displays per program timing, leading to successful launch of the product.* Using GM Studio theme (i.e., A-surface) as the guide, design mechanical components including castings, injection moldings, stampings, seals, PCBA mounts, adhesives, connector interface and fastening, etc.* Perform design calculations, GD&T and tolerance stacks.* Perform optimum material selection for specific applications within the display and for their interface to the vehicle (IP & Console, for example), using GM best practices and Materials Engineering as a partner in this selection.* Create 3D CAD, 2D CAD & lead CAD reviews with stakeholders.* Develop analysis and test plan for new design, perform proof of concept tests and analysis.* Lead prototyping and testing, analyze test data, and make necessary adjustments to mechanical designs.* Work with electrical engineers and PCBA designers to integrate components into electro-mechanical systems.* Support root cause analysis and solution development based on virtual and/or physical test results.* Build partnerships with functional peers internally within GM and externally at Tier 1 suppliers to align on display design per development cycles.* Develop virtualization technologies that help accelerate and de-risk product development.* Communicate design progress and risks to stakeholders and customers.* Drive mechanical design strategy for the enterprise.* Solid organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)* BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering degree* 10+ years of engineering experience in design and development of styled electronics and/or appearance grade injection molding, plating and casting.* Exceptional collaboration and teamwork skills; demonstrated ability for working across functional and organizational boundaries.* Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (NX and Teamcenter are the tools required to execute GM projects), 2D drawings, tolerance analysis, design for manufacturability, and assembly.* Strong analytical skills and engineering fundamentals in solid mechanics, material science, heat transfer, mechanism design, and manufacturing.* Hands-on experience engaging with display manufacturers.What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)* Master’s degree/PhD in Mechanical / Industrial Engineering* Mechanical design of plastics and structural components, PCBA integration with mechanical components, computers, or automotive electronics* Strong understanding of thermal solutions and their application.* Knowledge of vibrational and structural analysis* Experience with ASME Y14.5-2009 dimensioning & tolerancingCompensation: The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position, as well as geography of the selected candidate. • The salary range for this role is (159,400 - 245,000).
