Job summary

BlackSky is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer for Payloads to lead and contribute to the development and integration of satellite optical payloads from concept to production. You will ensure payloads meet stringent mechanical and thermal requirements and collaborate with internal and external partners to mature concepts into robust designs.

Qualifications

• BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or similar field.
• 10+ years of professional mechanical engineering experience.
• Experience maturing designs from concepts to detailed drawings.
• Experience with optical system design in spacecraft payloads.
• Familiarity with space-grade design requirements.
• Experience leading small to moderate cross-functional teams.
• Proficiency with CAD to develop part/assembly models and drawings.
• Working knowledge of ANSI Y14.5 TDs.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and integration of payloads into satellite structures.
• Collaborate with internal and external teams to develop technical plans.
• Develop and maintain engineering and manufacturing drawings and docs.
• Support manufacturing and production by resolving issues and implementing corrective actions.
• Develop tooling and ground support equipment as needed.
• Ensure payloads meet mechanical requirements throughout the program lifecycle.
• Document designs and analyses in technical reports and presentations.
• Perform design judgments balancing performance, manufacturability, and schedule.
