Job description

Our client is a ground-floor healthcare robotics startup backed by top-tier venture capital, building the world's first fully autonomous robotic pharmacy dispensing system. Operating at the intersection of AI, computer vision, precision robotics, and healthcare automation, they go from sealed wholesale bottles to filled, verified prescription vials with zero human involvement. Across the country, 1 in 3 US pharmacies has shut down, expanding healthcare deserts and driving remaining pharmacists to a breaking point. Our client’s mission is to solve this crisis by deploying automated systems that fill prescriptions in 60 seconds or less—freeing pharmacists to focus on patient care while giving patients instant access to life‑saving medications. Founded by experienced tech and hardware leaders (with leadership backgrounds from Tesla, Waymo, Zipline, and successful healthcare startups), they operate as a lean, high-trust team with zero bureaucracy and high autonomy.

About the Role

As a Senior/Staff Mechanical Engineer, you will architect and lead the mechanical design and manufacturing strategy for critical robotic subsystems. You will build complex electromechanical mechanisms that handle medications with pharmaceutical‑grade precision, design for both high and low volume production, and scale a patent‑pending robotics platform from prototype to nationwide deployment in the tens of thousands of units.

Responsibilities
  • Complex Mechanism Design: Design sophisticated, high‑speed mechanisms for pharmaceutical‑grade medication dispensing that operate reliably 24/7 with tight tolerances.
  • Design for Scale (DFx): Lead Design for Manufacturing/Assembly (DFM/DFA) strategies across low‑and high‑volume production methods, scaling systems from early prototypes to over 4,000 units annually.
  • Ground‑Up Architecture: Own the mechanical architecture from initial concept through production release. Balance high innovation with practical manufacturability, serviceability, and field reliability.
  • Cross‑Functional Integration: Integrate mechanical hardware seamlessly with robotics, computer vision, electrical subsystems, compute units, and thermal/enclosure structures.
  • Supplier & Manufacturing Partnerships: Establish manufacturing partnerships, drive cost‑reduction initiatives, and produce comprehensive build‑to‑print documentation packages for contract manufacturers.
  • Testing & Uptime Validation: Lead design verification and testing (DVT) protocols, execute FMEAs, and implement reliability testing to guarantee 99.99%+ uptime in live pharmacy environments.
Qualifications
  • (Note: Portfolio showing real physical products/projects is required)
  • Builder Experience: Proven track record taking physical electromechanical products ground‑up from concept through design, testing, manufacturing, and field deployment.
  • Experience: 8+ years of hands‑on mechanical or mechatronic engineering experience.
  • Complex Mechanisms & Tight Tolerances: Expertise in designing high‑precision, high‑reliability mechanical systems and moving mechanisms.
  • Production & Manufacturing Expertise: Deep knowledge of diverse fabrication methods (machining, molding, casting, sheet metal) and a track record of scaling products to high‑volume contract manufacturing.
  • CAD Mastery: Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD platforms (OnShape, SolidWorks, or Creo) utilizing master modeling techniques.
How You’ll Hire
  • Technical Deep‑Dive Interview: (60 min)
  • Leadership Interview: (60 min)
What Our Client Offers
  • Compensation: Highly competitive base salary plus meaningful early‑stage equity in an automated healthcare startup scaling nationally.
  • Benefits: Full health coverage, 401(k), and unlimited PTO.
  • Culture: Ground‑floor opportunity to work alongside top engineers, AI researchers, and healthcare pioneers with direct access to executive leadership.

Equal Opportunity Statement: Our client is committed to diversity and inclusivity in the workplace.
