Stormentum Inc. is seeking a Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to prototype and scale power electronics hardware for AI data centers, EVs, and microgrids. You’ll own the design from concept through production, optimizing thermal, electrical, and packaging performance while coordinating with multi-disciplinary teams.
This hands-on role demands strong fundamentals, external partner management, and a track record of delivering robust hardware in fast-moving startup contexts.
Stormentum builds power infrastructure for AI data centers, EV charging, and microgrids. Our patented, modular power electronics architecture merges UPS, battery, and rectifier stages into one platform, from grid to GPU, with fewer conversion stages and more compute from every megawatt. Founded by executives with decades of leadership across technology, wireless, and energy, we’re bringing together world‑class engineering talent to rethink how power is delivered.
Power, not compute, is quickly becoming the limiting factor for AI. As a Staff Mechanical Design Engineer at Stormentum, you'll design the hardware that converts, stores, and delivers energy to data centers and microgrids at the density, cost, reliability, and scale that AI training and inference require. You'll push voltage, power density, thermal performance, insulation, and manufacturability on products that don't exist yet, then carry them into production.
As our first mechanical engineer, you'll identify the highest-impact mechanical bets in power electronics and drive them from concept through prototype, validation, and scalable manufacturing. The work is deeply multidisciplinary, drawing on statics and dynamics, fluids and thermals, and mechanics and vibration, with enough electrical, magnetic, and materials understanding to make system‑level tradeoffs alongside our electrical, magnetics, controls, and manufacturing teams.
This is a hands‑on, prototype‑first role where you'll own problems end to end in a fast‑moving startup.
Serve as the mechanical lead with our external hardware development partner, defining requirements, reviewing designs, and holding deliverables to schedule and quality
Support mechanical integration for novel data center and microgrid electrical distribution systems, including third‑party and internally developed power electronics, as well as mechanical, thermal, and electrical test infrastructure
Develop engineering test plans, prototype builds, and validation strategies that move new technologies quickly from concept to high‑volume production, improvising test setups as needed and running on‑site test campaigns at outside labs
Run multi‑physics simulations and optimizations (thermal, CFD, structural) to refine designs against performance, thermal, structural, and environmental requirements
Own the modeling and design of electro‑mechanical components such as heat sinks, cold plates and manifolds, high‑current busbars and interconnects, insulation systems, magnetic elements, and custom PCBA components
Solve packaging challenges across air and liquid cooling, high‑voltage creepage and clearance, EMI, vibration, enclosure ratings, and structural and seismic requirements
Identify and prioritize mechanical technology improvements that increase power density, raise voltage capability, lower cost, and enable automated manufacturing, and set the metrics and targets that track progress
Build cost models and trade studies that guide manufacturing process choices and keep designs cost‑effective from concept through production
Work closely with electrical, magnetics, systems, controls, and manufacturing engineers to fit designs into the broader architecture, weighing system‑level tradeoffs in efficiency, reliability, and deployability
Produce complete drawing packages, manufacturing instructions, and assembly processes that support both rapid prototyping and scalable production
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master's degree preferred
8+ years of hands‑on mechanical design experience in power electronics, energy systems, or industrial high‑power hardware, with a strong record of bringing new products from development into production
Minimum of two full product development cycles taking distinct hardware products from concept to market
Hands‑on experience packaging high‑voltage power electronics at 400 V and above, such as 480 VAC three‑phase or 800 to 1000 VDC systems
Strong first‑principles thinking, with a track record of practical, resourceful solutions to complex mechanical and thermal challenges
Hands‑on experience building and testing prototypes, including custom fixtures and test setups
Multi‑physics simulation (thermal, CFD, structural) and cost modeling experience
Experience managing external engineering partners, suppliers, or contract manufacturers
Broad knowledge of manufacturing processes, including injection molding, stamping, die‑casting, dispensing, fastening and joining, and automated assembly, along with familiarity with PCBAs and their components
Solid mechanical engineering fundamentals, including GD&T, finite element analysis, and design for reliability
Proficiency with tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or CATIA, plus ANSYS, STAR-CCM+, MATLAB, or Python
Working knowledge of environmental, safety, and industry standards for energy and industrial products, along with basic electrical and magnetic design principles
Ability to travel for extended on‑site testing at outside labs
Industrial power hardware experience, such as utility‑scale inverters, industrial drives, or battery energy storage power conversion systems
Data center power or thermal hardware experience, such as 480V server rack power systems, PDUs, or liquid‑cooled power conversion
Packaging for rack‑level systems, containerized systems, medium‑voltage cabinets, or skids, from tens of kilowatts to megawatt scale
Experience designing to UL 62368‑1, UL 1973, or UL 9540, and familiarity with rack standards such as EIA‑310 and OCP Open Rack
Early‑stage startup experience
